PROBLEM: Backlight keys in console on Samsung N220 netbook

Cannot control the backlight with the Fn keys in console mode

[2.]  

While under console backlight cannot be controlled using the
Fn+UpDownArrows keyboard keys, under X the backlight can be set with
them. 

The backlight can be set using setpci.

The issue does not appear with acpi=off. That way the Fn keys work well
to fully control the backlight. But should this be the solution?
