This is odd, especially because you shouldn't be getting a login screen in 
the first place.
Virtual PC must be doing something odd...
Do you get any hints in /var/log/messages?

I guess I found the problem. I figured 2GB would be enough space. Guess 
not. Here's the result of 'df':

/dev/hda2              1590887   1556113         0 100% /
none                     79488         0     79488   0% /dev/shm

Can't do much when the root partition is full. I'm surprised the 
install said it completed OK given that the disk was full. When I have 
another 2 hours, I'll install into a bigger drive file.
