Bug#683928: Please include http.debian.net as Type: GeoDNS (?) in Mirrors.masterlist

Package: mirrors
Severity: normal
Tags: d-i

Hi dear Debian Mirrors Team,

I would like you to consider including http.debian.net as "GeoDNS"
mirror in Mirrors.masterlist. This would allow getting http.debian.net
selected as default mirror in debian-installer (choose-mirror).

The entry would probably be:

  Site: http.debian.net
  Type: GeoDNS
  Archive-architecture: amd64 armel armhf hurd-i386 i386 ia64 kfreebsd-amd64 kfreebsd-i386 mips mipsel
powerpc s390 s390x sparc
  Airchive-http: /debian/
  Backports-http: /debian-backports/
  Old-http: /debian-archive/
  Archive-upstream: ftp-master.debian.org
  IPv6: yes
  Maintainer: Raphael Geissert <rgeissert <at> debian.org>
Comment: HTTP redirector that uses the geo and network location of the
user and the mirrors, the architecture of the requested files, IP
address family, the availability and freshness of the mirrors, and a
   few other things. Details: http://http.debian.net

The list of open questions is at least:

a) Type: GeoDNS - Does it really make sense ?

e) looks like a particularly interesting question to me.

No; choose-mirror lists either push-primary mirrors in a country,
or for countries with none, leaf mirrors in the country, before
geodns mirrors.

I noticed that from choose-mirror history. Then I assume it would be possible
to implement a new "Type: Redirector" that would get sorted first, right?

Cheers,

IIRC, it should but it first needs Mirrors.masterlist to be changed.

Hi,

AFAIK this type is hardcoded in several places.

There's no risk, because: 1) GeoDNS entries are ignored by http.d.n, and 2)
it would fail to obtain the site trace (no mirror has a
project/trace/http.debian.net) and as such it would not be enabled.

> e) status of the integration of http.d.n to http.d.o ?

At least one member of the DSA team mentioned that switching away from
mod_perl would make it easier to move it to DSA hw. Nothing has been
discussed about moving it to d.o, however.

Cheers,
