Sponsoring DebConf for Summer of code students

Hi

During the first IRC status meeting I had today with the Summer of Code
student I'm mentoring together with Per Andersson the topic of wheter
she planned to go to DebConf or not came up. it turned out that she did
not yet know about DebConf and did not consider it at all.

I guess the situation might be similar for other GSOC students. IMHO
going to DebConf could make a big difference for a GSOC project. Getting
more involved into the community increases the chances that these people
will stay active in the project even after summer of code.

Therefore I propose to make an exception for these students so that they
can still register for sponsored food and accomodation until 3th June.
What do others think?

One problem might be that most students don't have the money to fund
their own travel to nicaragua. Should we ask the DPL to fund another
DebConf newbies program for those from Debian money? This might be a bit
problematic as we don't have much money for normal travel sponsorship at
the moment at all.

Gaudenz

Hi,

I heartly agree it is worthwhile having the students attending at debconf.
It really can make a difference if they go there to meet their mentors (and
people related to their project), they held a session about their project,

At least I can help about this if no other person more involved than
me in general GSOC orga is attending DC12 (and provided that some GSOC
students are in MGA). I'm following GSOC for quite some time now and,
even though I never involved myself a lot, I think I have a quite
rough but good idea about what needs and can be done about all this,
after witnessing Arthur's great work at last DebConfs.

And, well, organizing and animating people is at least something
that's in my own skills, as long as you don't need me to code in some
weird language ("weird" begins at shell programming for me..:-)).

I think thats fine, but we should handle it "silently", ie you tell the
students and we override penta for those gsoc students who will apply.

I'd first like to see a current budget estimate based on the latest numbers of
attendes and 5 USD food price. In principal I'm fine with the idea...

cheers,

Hi,

Even though Ana's points are important and very true, I side with
Holger here. It is important for us to have them in DebConf if it is
possible.

Now, again with Ana's points: Yes, DebConf has no money to sponsor
anybody, so it would have to come from extraordinary sources. Also,
July is quite close, so probably some of the 15 will not be
available. I think a DebConf sponsorship should be offered to them as
a *UNSURE* thing, asking them to say who would participate. *IF* seven
of them say they can participate, we might be able to get the funding,
as Ana suggests, partly from Google and partly from other Debian
funds. If more were to request it, we could just tell them, "well, we
told you it was unsure, and... sorry."

As for what would they do, besides meeting tons of Debian people, I
volunteer together with Christian to try to welcome them - I will be
coordinating the tutorial track, thought originally for Central
Americans, but quite probably adequate for them as well.

Greetings,

[Discussion about having GSOC students to go to DebConf skip]

Hi,

Thanks everybody who wants to help! So for managing all the stuff
about asking students, mailing google and so on, who wants to volunteer?

Thanks,
Ana
