Hello,

There's a small typo in the announcement (I guess it's gobby).

Thanks

Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 updated

The Debian project is pleased to announce the fifth update of its stable
distribution Debian GNU/Linux 4.0 (codename "etch"). This update mainly
adds corrections for security problems to the stable release, along with
a few adjustment to serious problems.

Please note that this update does not constitute a new version of Debian
GNU/Linux 4.0 but only updates some of the packages included. There is
no need to throw away 4.0 CDs or DVDs but only to update via an
up-to-date Debian mirror after an installation, to cause any out of date
packages to be updated.

Those who frequently install updates from security.debian.org won't have
to update many packages and most updates from security.debian.org are
included in this update.

will this affect downstream things like ubuntu? Or are these things
already implemented in ubuntu.

Debian Etch is a contemporary of Ubuntu 7.04, Feisty Fawn. Debian's
release cycles occur on geological time scales. A stable release only
gets bug fixes and security updates. Basically it means there is a new
CD/DVD out with bug fixes/security packages so a new install doesn't
have to apt-get so many updates.

The Ubuntu packages that come from Debian come from Debian unstable
which was what brave people used as Ubuntu before Ubuntu was conceived.
According to the release schedule they were frozen on June 26th so they
are considerably more recent.

So no impact on Ubuntu.

Debian Unstable, when I was using it, was about as stable as Fedora Core
(Stable).

I've always found it's Testing that one needs to watch for :(

Testing/Lenny here with no problem. Of course, it also depends on the level of work one's doing I suppose. :)

cheers

it may, but there aren't to many releases of ubuntu that are still supported.
so if you're using 6.06, no...

the idea is that both debian and ubuntu feedback updates to the upstream
package provider... so the answer is that i should effect everybody =)
the main issue is that not all the patches get accepted upstream.

cheers,

Um, there is no such page... could you check it, please?
