Re: EMC 2.2.7 + 7i43 + Ted's sample, and same error than using EMC 2.2.6 + 7i43 + Ted's sample.... What now?

You have the 200k gate version, not the 400k gate version.

I found this out by looking at the error output on line 264 of your pastebin
[ 114.376380] hm2/hm2_7i43.0: board has FPGA '3s200tq144', but the
firmware in hm2/7i43/SVST4_4B.BIT is for FPGA '3s400tq144'

This relatively difficult to read line shows that you have a 3s200tq144,
but you're trying to load a bitfile for a 3s400tq144 (note 200 vs 400 in
those numbers).

Change your HAL file so it's looking for firmware without a B at the end
- you need the file hm2/7i43/SVST4_4.BIT.

It would help if you would also pastebin your configuration files. So
far you have told us the errors you get, but I've never seen the input
you give EMC2 to get them.

This error can also be because of a EPP communication error, so Richard: what
type of 7I43 do you have, 200K or 400K (Look at the Part number on the largest
chip on the card)

I'm (almost) sure it's the 400k version, because is the one i asked when
i bought it, this night when in home i'll check that again.

This may also indicate a inability to communicate with the card.

1. Is the card jumpered for EPP (W4 and W5 both in the 'down' position)

2. Is the card powered properly (all three status LEDS = RED RED YELLOW)
    Should be on at power-up

3. Is your parallel port set for EPP 1.9 mode?

4. What kind of parallel cable do you have? We have done all of our testing
    with Flat cable.

Can you also tell me the motherboard type and cable length?

I'm chasing some timing/ noise problems in the FPGA and CPLD code
and duplicating your setup would be helpful here

Thanks, I doubt if I can get the same motherboard, but I'm sure I can get one

Re: EMC 2.2.7 + 7i43 + Ted's sample, and same error than using EMC 2.2.6 + 7i43 + Ted's sample.... What now?

OK I tried rev B 7I43s (your card rev) with 2 motherboards using the VIA
VT82C686 (one VT82C686A and one VT82V686B). This is the same South bridge as
your motherboard.

Using a short cable (1 foot) I had no trouble configuring or doing a EPP
loopback test (I did 100 million EPP operations with no errors on both
motherboards)

There are a couple of possibilities:

1. The 7I43 you have is bad in some way (not too likely)

2. The cable you are using is not wired correctly or has a short (easy to do
with hand assembled flat cables)

3. The 7I43 you have somehow does not have the latest CPLD firmware that echos
the FPGA size (This should only apply to very early 7I43s and I think yours
is recent)

4. Somthing is wrong with your parallel port

Can you boot DOS on your EMC PC?

If you could try some of my test utilties Maybe I can get a better idea of the
exact problem.

Download the latest 7I43 support package from:

http://www.mesanet.com/software/parallel/7i43.zip

Unzip this and copy these three files:

configs\hostmot2\epphm2\svst4_4b.bit
utils\epp\sc7i43p.exe
utils\epp\epptest.exe

to a working directory on some convenient media

Then run this command (assuming your parallel port address is set to 0x378)

sc7i43p svst4_4b.bit

If this succeeds you can try a loopback test:

Well.. this is somehting mesa people has to answer, because i asked for
the 400k version when bought. If they send the wrong one i'll have to
talk to them then.
I'll doublecheck my board and it's package again, but i think this can't

I have a 400K version, that line was already been discovered and i
already checked my card chip (it says 400). Also, when i bought it, i
asked for this version specifically. It would be more than a mistake if
i had a 200K instead of a 400K.

OK... sorry for the delay, but my work is killing me.

Finaly i managed (lack of time not brain) to burn a DOS start cd and put
there the files to make the test.

When "sc7i43p svst4_4b.bit 378", everything went fine.

When epptest 378

It says something like this:
"error count 1: loop count :100000"
"error count 2: loop count :200000"
"error count 3: loop count :300000"
And so on.

A) It this an error on every 100000 loops or there is no error at all?.

B) When i did epptest for the first time WITHOUT "sc7i43 svst4_4b.it"
first, it said something like Error: "send ah21" "read 00000000" or so,
so i think that "A" means no error.

So, if this means there is nothing wrong with my computer or the
card.... i guess the failure comes from the driver...
¿or it means i have to check something?

Did sc7i43P report that the 7I43 had a 400K FPGA?

Well it should say something like:

Pass: 1 Error Count: 0 loop count: 100000
Pass: 2 Error Count: 0 loop count: 200000
Pass: 3 Error Count: 0 loop count: 300000

No errors. Each loop does 24 EPP operations (2 32 bit writes and 2 32 bit

Ok, besides the chip say 400k, when using the prog. it reported 400k chip.
I'll post again tonight.
Greetings.

Since the driver wont load (reads wrong FPGA size) my guess is you
have the wrong parallel port address somehow

Have you tried upgrading to 2.2.8?

I just did this on a test machine here (motherboard parallel port @ 0x378,
7I43-4 connected), started emc, (absolutely stock, no changes) doubleclicked
on the hm2servo sample config (from Ted Hyde) and I was up and running (well I
dont have machine attached but I did end up with a Axis being a nice 3d
Etch-A-Sketch when I turned the motor shafts.

Thanks Sebastian!

If 2.2.7 doesnt work for him, i dont know why 2.2.8 would. Something's
wrong with Richard's hardware.

Also other than logging in, I didn't have to type _anything_
to get EMC running with the 7I43

Heres the (lazy) path I followed:

Install EMC 2.2.6 from LiveCD

Upgrade to 2.2.7 (via synaptic)

Re: EMC 2.2.7 + 7i43 + Ted's sample, and same error than using EMC 2.2.6 + 7i43 + Ted's sample.... What now?

Is nothing about lazyness... is about being tired of to do something
that is supossed to work.. and it does not! again and again and again.

When going your lazy path i got the following two messages.

"Acercar linea 10 en /usr/shareaxis/images/axis.ngc: bad character "x" used"

"RTAPI:: ERROR: Unespected realtime delay on task 1
This Message will only display once per session.
Run the Latency Test and resolve before continuing"

And all lights are always ON as they are from startup.

When using the old driver/firmware on 2.2.6, at least lights went off,
then init and done turned on, this time, nothing. When using the config
samples provided by Ted Hyde, lights go off and never come back on, and
then the "Unknown Command Error".

It seems to me, that firmware is not loading at all

this message tells you there is something wrong near line 10 of the file:
/usr/shareaxis/images/axis.ngc

it even tells you what is wrong:
bad character "x" used

your response to this should be:
open the file with an editor and look for an "x" character on or near line 10
if you cannot figure out what the error is then post a copy of a few
lines prior and a few lines past

someone will try to help you

this is a separate problem - you may run your machine but you may
experience hesitation during motion as something about the hardware is
using too much time.

Something is fishy here though - isn't axis.ngc the EMC2 splash screen
program? Hundreds of users are loading that g-code file every time they
start EMC, and it isn't causing errors.

Also, "X" is a perfectly legitimate character in g-code.

Richard, I think there might be a misunderstanding. Every time that emc
crashes, it creates a dmesg file that tells what was going on and what
happened when it crashed. the guys that are way better than I am can look
at this info and figure out what to do to fix the crashes. Every time
something is different and it crashes with different errors, the dmesg will
be different telling what's going on. so every time progress is made, we
(more like the other guys, wish i could personally help) will need a new
dmesg and copies of the current configurations being used in order to see
everything that is being done by the computer and where things go wrong.
Hope I'm able to help you and your situation, I just got an M5i20 card and

OK, here is the fact... the used files are exactly the same every
time... i never changed the hal, ini, etc.. files and the message is the
same every time, and this is why i'm so tired of saying the same thing
over and over again.
NO PROGRESS HAVE BEEN MADE, i have upgraded from 2.2.5 to 2.2.6, then
2.2.7, and now 2.2.8, and the same thing happens at the exact same time,
and the error message is exactly the same since 2.2.6 using the exact
same files that Ted Hyde provided me.
"Uncown Command line XX" and the line referres to the same command on
the same line in the same file, so... if you check the old posts is the
same now carbon copy.

Maybe so, but I, and as I'm a sub to this list, I must assume no one here has
seen the file they keep asking you to show us. So I went back through your

OK, but THAT file comes with EMC2 2.2.8 that was supposed to be working
following a lazy path and then just double click on emc2servo config.
Well, it seems to me that finally was not working at all, and that the
people saying they tryed that are really not doing it.

Lines prior and lines past... OK THIS COMES IN A WINDOW THAT HAS ONLY
THAT WRITEN ON IT!
so there is nothing prior nor past to post.

I have posted everything they asked, and it seems like they are not
reading what i post, just keep asking the same thing again and again.
Also the board has 3 lights, and as i can interpretate from them, the
firmware is not beeing loaded into board, but it seems lights are not

I was not suggesting that you were lazy, but just that I was lazy and took
the simplest route to testing the 7I43+EMC2.2.8.

Lazy meaning that I did nothing other then loading the latest EMC version
(by upgrading EMC 2.2.6 via Synaptic package manager to EMC 2.2.8)

This worked the first time I double clicked hm2servo, 0 problems

No Idea, I sure didnt see anything like this.

Is this a new 2.2.8 installation? Maybe its corrupted in some way

Every time id did this before, i made clean installs... this is the
first time i dont reinstall the entire Linux.
I just apt-get remove emc2 --purge then apt-get install emc2, so it
wouldn't be corrupted since is the same as using install_emc.sh.
