Re: at76c503a crashes on 2.6.21.3

Hi Pavel,

My WUSB11 works perfectly now (on 2.6.21.3), so
MANY SINCERE THANKS to you, Joerg, other developers
and anybody who stood by me during these trying times.

Now for a couple of odds & ends, more or less interesting, more or less pleasant.

I cannot produce hard evidence one way or another;
I feel that despite numerous and arduous attempts,
I was able to set up the WUSB11 connectivity
(rather quickly and painlessly) only _after_

Thank youse guys for the excellent points, clarifications and assistance.
For completeness, my particular device falls into the category
"NOT_SO_very_rare",
so everything is copacetic, the device still works on the Win machine
despite (or should I say because of) the Berlios firmware. Thanks again.
For the record, I'm proudly presenting the major attraction:
"/usr/src/at76c503a/at76_usb.c: registered eth1"

Unfortunately, I might have run into another problem - now that the driver loads successfully.
Despite my best attempts (maybe not good enough, though) I haven't yet managed to iwconfig the device to the
point where the wireless gets off the ground.
In case I haven't exhausted all the possibilities and it has something to do with the unsettling warning,

Please be more specific. A good problem report should include what you
are trying to achieve, what you are doing and what you are getting.
Neither seems to be described well.

Please avoid non-technical terms (like "gets off the ground") unless you
are absolutely sure that everybody understands what you mean.

If you need general help with wireless networking, it's probably a wrong
list. I'm sure there are good resources about Linux wireless on the
web.

You didn't describe a single command.

From what I see in the code, the firmware is only loaded into the device if it's
not already present or the present version is too old. So, the possibilities
would be:

1) The firmware is not present at startup. This means that the firmware is
volatile and would disappear when the device is reconnected to the Windows
machine, leaving the card in the same state as it was before connecting to the
Linux machine.

2) The firmware is old and gets replaced by the driver. The code for loading
the firmware is the same as for the case when there is no firmware, so the
firmware is not likely to be flashed permanently.

3) The firmware is present at startup and is new enough. In this case, the
driver is asking for the firmware unnecessarily. No firmware will be loaded by
the Linux driver.

Neither case should affect operation on a separate Windows machine. But it's
just my speculation. I cannot guarantee anything. If you cannot afford any
risks, please use a separate card.
