downgrading dashboard

I'm having two problems with installing xbox linux via mechinstaller.

First, I can't connect to the emergency linux program, I have a win98 and
win xp machine connected to the xbox by a router, but am unable to connect
to 192.168.0.3 lagging out everytime I attempt to.

Secondly, I need to downgrade my dashboard. Can someone give a tutorial or
basic concept of how to go about this.
Thanks

Re: downgrading dashboard

Thanks for the help, got the telnet to work. The downgrade seems to be a
hassle though, I'm extremely new to linux/unix (just started schooling for
it), and don't particularly know that much about the tampering I'm doing.
I'll try to track down the entire dash downgrade. I could probably get a
donor xbox too, could someone give me some instructions on how to complete
the procedure, such as replacing the dash files, and backing up the files
from the donor.

Re: downgrading dashboard

Andrew,

I know this can be somewhat of a pain to do, but if you are familiar with
FTP, you can transfer a copy of /dev/hda51 (the "C:" drive, mounted at
/mnt/C when you boot in Emergency Linux) from your donor box to a PC, and
then transfer it back to the xbox that you want to downgrade. Just make
sure your donor dashboard is an old enough version. What I suggest you do
is follow the instructions here:

http://xbox-linux.sourceforge.net/docs/howtoswprep.html

At the bottom are instructions for downgrading the xbox. If you need any
further help, send me an email & I'll hook ya up.

Regards,

Rob

Re: downgrading dashboard

Personally, I never found that article particularly helpful.

It seems like a large amount of hassle to downgrade, say, a 5659 dash to
4920 (the desired version).
There's a far easier way to do it - which is to locate (Possibly ask for
help on our IRC channel) a complete dash backup - this is probably just as
hard to find as the missing .xip files anyway...
The network related problem is probably due to a lack of knowledge of
basic TCP/IP networking. In order for you to connect to 192.168.0.3, with
the settings the xbox uses, the LAN IP address of your PC MUST be
192.168.0.<something> e.g. 192.168.0.2 in order for the connection to
succeed. If you are 192.168.1.* or something completely different, you'll
have no luck.

David

Correct. Many people do not seem to realize that they can _only_
connect to the Xbox if their PC is configured to use an IP
address from the same subnet the Xbox is using. If the PC is
configured in some other subnet, trying to connect to the Xbox
is simply not going to work. (Of course it is possible to
_later_ change the Xbox to use the same subnet as the PC, but
not yet while installing the system.)

* * *

That being said, it also seems to be relatively unknown
that you can configure _multiple IP addresses/subnets_
for a single NIC, with all of those addresses/subnets
being active _simultaneously_ in the same physical wire.

This enables having, say, both 1) a DHCP-configured public
IP address from your ISP _and_ 2) a static IP address in
the 192.168.0.x/24 network for connecting to your Xbox
while only using a single NIC.

Those using Windows on their desktop PC's may want to
read this article on the subject: <http://www.petri.co.il/
