USB access in qemu-kvm

Eric Hameleer's wiki page on hardware virtualization with qemu is from
2008 and I'm sure a lot has changed since then. This is the most
slackware-specific web page I've found on accessing USB devices from a VM.

I have win7sp1 installed in a qemu-kvm virtual machine and need to copy
.exe files from a USB flash drive to the virtual hard drive, then copy maps
from the virtual hard drive to the GPS receiver connected via a USB port.

I have the vendor and product IDs for both (from lsusb). The qemu-kvm
option, -usb, is included.

The wiki page directs us to use ctrl-alt-2 then type 'usb_add ...' and
return to the VM. That does not work here. If I type the usb_add command in
a linux virtual console I'm told the command does not exist. Same thing if I
type it in a win7 shell window.

Anyone have suggestions how to access these USB devices?
