Package Upgrades and Multilib

The systems here running 13.36/x86_64 have Alien Bob's multilib 32-bit
compatible libraries installed. What is the appropriate way to handle
security-patched upgrades to the base Slackware packages so they don't
remove the multilib versions?

Not long ago I discovered my Dell portable lost it's 32-bit compatibility
after I had used slackpkg to keep it current with patches. It might well be
something that I inadvertently did rather than a package upgrade so I would
like to better understand the relationships between the base and multilib
packages.

TIA,

Rich
