In Google's hard drive study, they focused on four smart "signals" that are useful in predicting hard drive failure: scan errors, reallocation counts, offline reallocations, and probational counts. Of the four, reallocation is the only one I recognize in smarttool's output as being attribute #5, reallocation sectors count (seen with smartctl -a /dev/sd?). Since all four items are smart items, what do the other 3 correspond to in the smarttools output? Do scan errors mean the results of a short or long test that fails? Looking through the list of attributes, my best guess for offline reallocations is #198, Uncorrectable Sector Count/Offline Uncorrectable/ Off-Line Scan Uncorrectable Sector Count and probational counts is #197, Current Pending Sector Count. But I don't know if I'm correct, or more likely, not. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Live Security Virtual Conference Exclusive live event will cover all the ways today's security and threat landscape has changed and how IT managers can respond.
