I agree with your conclusion except that is not the case.  As I said 
previously, I have set auto formatting to 72; and auto formatting 
shows as being activated in the lower right hand corner of the 
compose screen.

This issue has kept me from making Becky my full time mailer so I 
just will not use it to compose any important messages.

Well my setting is the same and I do not have your problem.
Are you using the latest version of Becky?
