Looks like you're compiling MH-E with the default (old) version of Emacs
on your system. Probably emacs21. Strange things can happen when there's
a mismatch between your Gnus runtime and compile-times (which is why we
ended up putting this info in mh-version :-). From the README:

    ** Compile.

If you run Emacs by any name other than `emacs', use the following
    instead:

Re: no mime support?

Bill,

thanks. i've spent a lot of time with the manual -- definitely! it's
very useful, but my eyes are still expecting exmh.

but, yes, it could be that my local emacs build or install isn't
complete. i'll look in that direction. (for whatever personal
idiosyncrasy, i'm only willing to run emacs under X, not under mac
windowing.)

sorry, i only cut-and-pasted the first N lines. it looks on my screen
the way it did in my e-mail to you. hopefully if i fix my emacs
installation, it will look better.

Greg

Try running src/emacs -Q from within your Emacs source directory. I
suspect that mh-version will give you Gnus v5.13 in both compile- and
run-time configurations and that you'll be seeing these messages
properly. Then you'll have a basis for trouble-shooting your
environment.

Be advised that there is (was) a known bug in Emacs23 that turns off
undo when composing email. If this is still the case, you can enable it
with `M-x buffer-enable-undo'. This might be a good use of
`mh-letter-mode-hook' :-).
