Mail from me doesn't appear i subscribed (mailing lists) folders

Hi,

Whenever I send mail to a mailinglist, I don't see my own mail in that mailing
lists' folder. If I remove "subscribe mutt-users <at> mutt.org" from .muttrc,
everything works fine.

Any idea what's wrong?

If you are using gmail smtp, gmail has you *original* copy in the "Sent"
folder/virtual-folder/label(???) and the return copy from the list appears
to them to be a "copy" so it does not show.

I saw the same when I first started using gmail and changed my smtp to my
isp and used the gmail "from" addr and see *all* my mail, ie: list mail,
this way as gmail no longer sees my list posts as duplicates.

I don't understand this.

Can you please explain this again? I can't follow what you said. Thanks!

What part?

Gmail is sending your mail so it saves a copy of your sent mail in the
"sent" folder/label. When the list mail returns with a copy of the mail
you sent, gmail sees it as a duplicate so it does not show (you already
have it in your "sent" folder).

If you do not use gmail's smpt service, the first time it will see the
mail is the return from the mail-list.

Use your isp's provided smtp service and use your gmail addr as the
"From:" address.

Right. I guess it's a cool feature if you use the Gmail interface, but as a
consumer of the IMAP-service it's quite annoying. I guess if I Bcc myself, then
Gmail will see the mail as originating from me, and show it in my inbox (I'm
testing this with this mail).

Isn't there any sort of anti virus that marks such mail as spoof mail? The
e-mail looks a bit less fishy if there's a link between the domain in the From
address and the domain of the first MTA. That's the only reason I'm sticking to
Google's SMTP.

Unless you Bcc to a *different* address, it is still a duplicate/copy and
you will have the same frustrations.

Not to date :^).

Nope, works fine. You can even do it through the Gmail web-interface. If you
compose a mail to yourself, it will be placed in your inbox. Thanks for the
explanation why this is necessary though.

My workaround for this helpful gmail feature is to (a) not use gmail or
(b) have mutt save a copy of the message I send to the list in the list
folder/mbox (using POP3, not IMAP):

fcc-hook vim_use <at> googlegroups\.com =2-Vim

But then you don't know it made it to the list ???

There's no way can know that since Gmail won't give you list mail that
originates from you.

The fcc-hook has a drawback in that the $record folder won't contain all sent
mail since mutt, as far as I know, does not support multiple folders the fcc
field.

Until mutt gets support for multiple fcc, or preferably Gmail supports turning
off this feature, I'll stick to the bcc solution.

which is why, as I explained, I do not use gmail smtp.

IIRC, you don't use gmail's SMTP but still use
gmail e-mail address in RCPT TO (while sending
through your ISP's SMTP), do you?

Technically this is the same as RCPT TO spoofing,
and may become blocked by virtually all ISPs in
the future...

So the real long term solution is to not use gmail
at all.

Looks like I wasn't completely awake when
replying. I meant MAIL FROM, not RCPT TO, of
course.

MAIL FROM spoofing.

Correct, but consider:

* The mail system is reliable enough for me, so I'm happy with just SMTP
  confirmation when sending.

* Should I have doubts there'd be an easy way of checking via Google
  Groups web archives.

* It's just mail going to a list. For messages going to an individual
(which might be more important) instead of going to a list you don't
get a more reliable confirmation either, and you can't check the
recipient's inbox like the mailing list web archive.
