No, they're a mailing-list hijacker. They "archive" your list, but allow people to sign up via their site and post to your list, in a "forum"-like environment. -- -- Eönwë (SpamCop subscriber, not staff/admin)

Did you look at the headers? Really strange....seemed to come from a spamcop.social mailing list, which doesn't exist AFAIK......

Au contraire, Pierre. maillist <at> roomity.com is subscribed to the spamcop.social mailing list http://news.spamcop.net/mailman/listinfo/mailman Others who are having problems with this 'condition' can be seen here http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?threadID=2211&tstart=0 spammers roomity.com hitting opensolaris list users and here http://article.gmane.org/gmane.lisp.common-lisp-net.devel/241 Re: roomity.com - I have noticed that most mailing lists I take care of have been subscribed by "maillist <at> roomity.com". And others. If you want to see roomity's site, enable your browser script functions and use http://roomity.com/home.jsp I would think that whoever is in control of the SC mailman mailing list might want to unsub/block maillist roomity. -- -- Mike Easter kibitzer, not SC admin

Huh. Never knew that. Who'd want to get .social via a mailing list,
especially when certain, eh, "events" happen that produce prodigious amounts
of posts in here? Geeze, the volume and size of the mail must be enormous at
times! Oh, that's right, Mr. Meanie just said he gets the group that way.
Would put me off this group entirely if I had to participate that way!

It is about 8000 times easier to filter email than it is to filter newsgroup stuff. It was simple to filter all the stupid stuff directly to the trash. Occasionally if I had to write a new rule, I could also apply the rule retroactively to my folder and zip, the stupid ones that I missed were also gone then. And the volume and size of the mail is no different than through the newsgroup. And I can delete all the ones I've read and don't need anymore and just keep the ones that I might possibly reply to or mark as unread the ones I wanted to respond to. Much easier, especially when I'm traveling, kind of like now.

I can see your point about filtering being easier, but isn't it hard to follow threads via email?

Threads? A thread doesn't really ever last more than a few responses. I mean whatever subject it is, you don't need to follow it for very long because it will change in a few anyways. Eventually they all turn into deep throating a corn dog or something like that. Well, unless it is a super long one about gun control and then I usually just delete all those. And generally people quote well enough so that I can follow the progression even if I haven't really read it all in order. And if they don't quote very well, then it probably doesn't really matter all that much, I won't spend much time worrying about what I might have missed there.

Yeah, but it's a lot harder to do that with email than simply "mark thread as read", ain't it?

They still thread and subthread normally by the message references. At least they do in Thunderbird. Instead of sorting by date, you sort them by thread and then just select the whole subthread and delete. Sorry to say that once a thread starts going down the pun path, they usually suffer the same fate too.

But it is a web based interface, isn't it? I don't want to bother to keep track of what I've read and haven't read in a web forum.

X-Archive: encrypt

I'm testing to see if I can put an encrypt line in the first line of the
body since I can't tinker with headerlines in OE.

All things considered, some of which I don't know about how you 'do it', the regular mailing list might be best. I don't like web gizmos or mailing lists instead of news. So I like gmane when it changes a mailing list into an nntp newsgroup for me, which I do with a local linux UG mailing list which is also a web gizmo. The idea of changing a newsgroup into a mailing list is the exact opposite of the direction I'm usually trying to go. -- -- Mike Easter

And how did "it" find us, then? Just us, not the other groups, just .social, where he's not wanted. Want to take a guess?

It was also sent to the sneakemail address I use here, presumably scraped, so it was more than just the newsgroup. And the mailing list does exist. It is the primary way I read the newsgroup since work blocks nntp.
