ADSL2+ here and now?

So according to Telecom I am on the East Tamaki exchange... and according to the spreadsheet on the Telecom site regarding ADSL2+ rollout, my exchange has been fully upgraded... however Telecom told me today that ADSL2+ is not going live until March...

I have set my router (D-Link G604T) to ADSL2+ MultiMode, but it is only syncing to the exchange as ADSL_G.dmt... and getting my usual 7616kb downstream...Should I be seeing it connect using an ADSL2 mode of some sort (and possibly 10Meg+ connection speed)? or is Telecom going to throw a switch sometime in March and after that it will all magically be ADSL2+?

regards,
Jared

I suspect the process will involve your ISP magically adding an entry to
their pricelist for ADSL2.

Re: ADSL2+ here and now?

Why? Is Telecom wholesaling ADSL2+ at a higher rate?

Cheers,

Why wouldn't they? They wholesale a 2m/128k for more than a 256/128k.

And they claim they are spending $1.4 billion to bring ADSL2+ speeds to more
users (cabinetisation), one assumes they will want some return on that
investment.

Re: ADSL2+ here and now?

It will require Telecom to change the port settings to say that the port is allowed to negotiate ADSL2+.

I would also fully expect that when they do this some older ADSL routers will break due to software bugs.

So are ADSL2+ modems using the ADSL2+ magic and being artificially speed
limited to ~8Mbit, or are they forbidden to use ADSL2+ and fall back to
the original ADSL protocol/encoding/what-have-you?

If the former then I would expect an improvement over the 2Mbit my 8
year old modem gives me. If the latter I wouldn't expect any difference.

I daren't start a discussion about the politics of Telecom preventing
higher speeds even when it has the hardware in place, but I will say
that it feels a lot like the beginning of ADSL, where we were all stuck
on 128kb/s while our modems synced at many times that speed (that is
unless we could afford the very very expensive full rate service).

Re: ADSL2+ here and now?

I've only seen one exchange where the modem was allowed to negotiate
ADSL2+. The others simply don't have it enabled, so the modem cannot
negotiate the use of it. The one that had it enabled was getting a
13Mb/s connection.

I for one am looking forward to our new 25Mbps/128kbps speed plans !

Re: ADSL2+ here and now?

So I'm in a very similar situation to Jared. Same make and model of
modem (ADSL2+-capable D-Link G604T with latest V2 firmware) on an
ADSL2+-enabled exchange (Riccarton). When I checked the status of my
modem I saw I'm getting 7659kb/s down 944kb/s up. I asked my ISP
(Maxnet) to investigate why I wasn't seeing ADSL2+ performance. They
were very helpful, replying thus:

Your line stats show that you are correct and ADSL2+ profiles have been
enabled on your ISAM. However I can see that your modem is not getting
the benefit that you should see.

Spectrum Profile: HSI-ADSL2-AM
Service Profile: HSI2-I-FSFS

parameter.actual.bitrate.ds kb/s 7659.0 944.0
parameter.attainable.bitrate.ds kb/s 16556.0 944.0

As you can see my attainable rate is 16556kb/s but I'm only getting
7659kb/s

They also noted that my SNR was 25db which is apparently too high and
they arranged for my line to be tweaked by Telecom to bring it within
the normal SNR range of 12-15db. I was pretty dubious about this, but
not being a telecoms expert, I didn't argue. This morning that tweak
seems to have happened because my SNR is now 13db. Is there such a
thing as too high an SNR?

Anyway, while my SNR has reduced from 25db to 13db, my line performance
is basically identical (actually slightly worse this morning <at> 7616kb/s
down 896kb/s up - I wonder if the reduction in SNR has caused that
slight reduction?) Can anyone offer any advice as to how to get ADSL2+
performance, when everything at my end seems to be in place to get the
higher performance?

Regards,

Simon

bingo... well, you'll probably have to change to super uber expensive plan
or similar before you'll get the speed increase, but you get the idea.

Re: ADSL2+ here and now?

Rem im a amateur in this stuff...but something strange happened on my
connection in Manurewa about Sept 07..I was running a Cisco 827 and was
getting consistent 2500/2700 downloads and 420/500 upload...
I had a d-link dsl-504g that I connected up and immediately was getting
6200 /6500 dl and 520/580 ul
So connected up the old m1122 and that was the same as the Cisco.
Would this have something to do with adsl2 ?
I cant see if the Mamurewa connection is still at those speeds as it has
been down graded and now living in Cambridge...where with the d-link get
about 2700 and 480
Thu sometime after the 23rd the manurewa a/c will be up graded and will be
moving back there.

Have a Nice Day
