There are some parts of the aoetools that don't really have to do with
the Linux kernel driver for AoE. The aoeping program, for example, is
a purely userland utility. It should work on a 2.4 system, although I
haven't tried it yet.

There are no plans to make the kernel-dependent parts compatible with
the 2.4 driver. There are a few reasons ...

  * The 2.6 driver is in the Linux kernel proper, so there's a need
for supporting software distributed in a separate package. The
2.4 driver is only available as a third-party driver outside of
the 2.4 kernel itself. That third-party distribution is self
    contained.

That is, the kernel-related parts of aoetools aren't needed by 2.4
users, and the non-kernel-related parts are already usable by 2.4
    users.

  * Distros will be moving away from 2.4 as new ones continue to use
2.6 and old ones wane in popularity. It keeps the aoetools simple
