ArticleIDs gone missing

I was downloading a 78 part .rar file at the back end of last week and got from
HIGHWAYMEN_ONTHEROAD.part01.rar up to HIGHWAYMEN_ONTHEROAD.part47.rar.001-049 when it quit on me.

The queue showed all the unloaded parts but the ArticleIDs column was blank. Anytime it's happened before,
I just deleted the the outstanding items, re-loaded the .nzb file and carried on.

This time around though, nothing changes, the ArticleIDs column stays blank. I created a new .nzb file,
containing just the parts I haven't got yet but still the ArticleIDs column stays blank.

I tried deleting the various databases but that didn't change anything so I did a completely fresh install
of BNR3 and imported a .nzb file that had worked perfectly last week - still the ArticleIDs column stays
blank. I then did a fresh install of BNR2 - same thing.

I've got two different NSPs so they can't be the cause.

I'm assuming it must be something wrong wrong with the PC (running Windows XP SP3) but it was running only
BNR3 at the time, nothing else apart from F-Secure Internet Security 2010.

Has anybody got any ideas please?

Re: ArticleIDs gone missing

When you import your nzb file do you have the last option highlighted (ticked)?
" try downloading by msgid etc etc"

Re: ArticleIDs gone missing

Well, I've solved the problem:
Poking around at anything that would respond, I found that the Newsgroups Window was empty.

I wasn't able to find a "re-load the available newsgroups from this server" command anywhere and the
"Reload" tab in the Newsgroups window is greyed out (as are the two Force... tabs) so I created a new
instance of the existing server and got an automatic download of the groups.

Is anybody able to tell me a better way than this?

With the Newsgroups window re-populated, I loaded the .nzb file again and all the Article IDs were in place
and I could carry on.

Glad you got it fixed. Other way is to "Force Exist" a group and then you
will be able to click on it and "Reload Groups", or turn off the group cmd
and then the servers (If they can run without that cmd) dont care about
groups, but they must be set for MSGID only all the way.

Sounded like something just got damaged in BNR's database, or a problem
with the .nzb file something that can often happen with some indexing
sites.

I have stopped using one site altogther because they had some problem and
I kept getting missing areas like you said with this...

(Beta)): Exception Access violation at address 005159CF in module 'BNR3.exe'. Read of address 07DE8000

BNR Replacement?

I've been using BNR 2 & 3 forever, but would like to try something else.
Would anyone be kind enough to suggest a suitable replacement?

Thanks much,

Paul

Re: BNR Replacement?

Paul,

I generally use Newsbin Pro, which has a fee but lifetime free upgrades,
continued development and technical support.

I accepts input of NZBs and will decode and unpack files, such as
videos, that are posted with RAR parts and par files.

Re: BNR Replacement?

The only one I found that had the features I like and many I wish BNR had
incorporated is NewsMan Pro

http://www.newsmanpro.com/

I still use BNR though mainly because I'm familiar with it and it does what I
need.

What features does NMP have that cant be dont with BNR2/3 ?

I have used every bin downloader there is (over the years) and have yet to
find anything that has things (useful) that BNR cant do.

I understand that the sqLite version (3) needs some tuning to your system
(i.e. its not so fast as a frest install) to get it running faster than
BNR2 but then its unsurpassed IMO. I have had its data base running for
over 15~16 months at a time with no problems, just using my .bat files
every month or 3 to keep the db clean and quick.

Re: BNR Replacement?

This is a discussion that has already taken place. Do a search for better filtering or Feature Request and
you'll see the posts from 2008 on this very topic.

For the lazy this was the last post I made on the topic. Not gonna rehash. Use what ya like and enjoy. And yup I'm
still using BNR3.

Strange ...my NNTP reader has posts going back to 2005 which must have
been the last time I pruned the posts and I cant find any on
filtering. Other than the .nix version, I might check the Y groups, but
TBH they are too much like hard work to read over news.gMane

I also cant see how this could be an area which BNRx is lacking as it has
almost perfect reg-ex filtering power.

But as NNTP index sites are 10 a penny now good filtering is not something
a NNTP downloader 'really' needs, unless the user cant work reg-ex then I
'spose it could be seen to be lacking.

Also a post from 3 years back cant have any new NNTP downloader info in
it.

As I said in all the many years I have been using BNRx there is nothing
that can come close.

Re: BNR Replacement?

Yup BNR does the job and is why I continue to use it years after development on it has stopped. As for what it
"really" needs that's subjective. The authors saw that it could use a few things as did I and acknowledged that.

But it does the job I need it to do and as long as it does it will remain used. However, I acknowledge that others
may like to see more features built into their reader of choice which is why I mentioned the only one I'd
played with that had some nice features and leave it to them to see whether it has something they want that
BNR doesn't have.

Regex is familiar to me. In fact if you look in the Files section you'll see that I contributed a few very
simple filters to help beginners.

I use regex at work and used to use it back before the Web when I had to use gopher to search the internet. But
it's not something I'd expect the average user to be comfortable with and even some programmers don't like
it.

Even with BNR's filtering support it fell short of what I was trying to do and when I asked the authors for help
I was told that I couldn't do that with the current filtering in BNR and that they had plans to improve or
replace it.

That doesn't mean it was broken just that I was trying to do something a bit more advanced that it could do.
That too was in the past posts. Not going to look em up again though.

But with all that said I still use it and will continue to use it until something changes and I can no longer use it.

Not to mention, I've moved away from Usenet to be honest and use emule / bit torrents far more.

So I can not give any in depth comparison between BNR and say NewsManPro as I don't really use it. When I did
look I saw that it was able to do what I wanted without having to use any external indexing options but I still
prefer BNR.

Re: BNR Replacement?

I don't have a link to the discussion between Jeff and I. Don't really feel like searching honestly but in the
link I did provide previously here's a quote from Jeff:

"That is where I plan to someday put the new filtering system that will supercede and replace the current
Kill/Want filters."

This was after the posts about the limitation of the current filtering system. He acknowledged that the
kill/want filters, while adequate, had limitations. Otherwise why replace with a new filtering system?

Anyway, it's all a moot point now honestly.
