Frustrated with 5.1 and Geode

Hi

Sorry for my english, I'm not english-spoken...

I've some boxes Epatec powered with Geode GX processor, seems same hardware that Wyse 3150, I use them just for RDP (Windows 2003 Server).

Runing with Thinstation 2.2 with rdesktop the performance es very poor, in same enviroment a very old PC with Windows 95 works a lot faster, so I've downloader TS5.1 to try if with Xorg7 (with Geode support) and freerdp works better.

The first issue is that if I use the machine WYSE-3150SE there is a small bug, in /machines there is no WYSE-3150SE, but a WYSE3150SE exists so I've changed the build.conf and it compiles ok.

When I replace thinstation.nbi and thinstation.nbi.zpxe in my TFTP server the boxes reboot inmediatly after get a IP from DHCP. If I use thinstation.nbi from 2.2 and thinstation.nbi.zpxe from 5.1, the boxes boots but after the image is loaded, a checksum error appear and it stops.

I've compiled the image a few times, allways checksum error (and using thinstation.nbi from 2.2, because the version generated with 5.1 does not works). I've installed 5.1 in a VMWare enviroment, but don't think this cause any problem.

Any hint? Does anybody have TS5.1 & Wyse 3150 (or any Geode GX thin client) working?

Regards

TS-5.x doesn't work with Geode GX as it isn't an i686 class processor.
A Geode NX will work.

Re: Frustrated with 5.1 and Geode

I think there is an issue with nbi and the newer kernels. You should switch to PXE. It simpler and more compatable.

Re: Frustrated with 5.1 and Geode

Hi Mike

But Wyse 3150SE has a GeodeGX and apparently is supported in TS5.1, isn't it? My boxes are these: http://www.tul.com.tw/Global/pdf_link/TC3520%20Spec%20(050927).pdf

Do you think that Thinstation will work in them? 2.2 works, but slow, probably because the VESA driver does not fit 100% with Geode, the mouse cursor does not move smooth...

If you are happy with 4:3 screens you should have a fair chance of
something better than the VESA driver in TS-2.2.2. Actually with
certain chipsets you'll get away with 16:9 (Some VIA and Nvidia).
Forget about Intel. But the pdf doesn't reveal the video chipset, so
you'll have to do some digging yourself. If you don't know include
package lshw and run that,

Hmm. Apparently the Geode GX (nee Cyrix MediaGX) actually does have a
cmov instruction, so Don is probably right that the problem is nbi.
Only other possibility is if Crux/TS depends om the NOPL instruction
not available in GX, which isn't very likely.

Which brings up the next question: Is there *any* reason why we still
support nbi (or loadlin for that matter)? Is it possible at all to buy
a NIC with Etherboot? Has it been for many years? Even the successor
gPXE died years ago.

TS is complicated enough already and we have to throw some legacy and
obsolete stuff overboard. My personal hate item is floppy support. Has
*anybody* used a floppy in the 21st century? Can you even buy them
anywhere anymore?

I'm with you Mike.

+1 to drop nbi support.

Re: Frustrated with 5.1 and Geode

I think it will work, but nbi booting does not work. You need to switch to PXE or try some local media.

TS-5.x doesn't work with Geode GX as it isn't an i686 class processor.
A Geode NX will work.

Subject: Frustrated with 5.1 and Geode

Regards
