Random thoughts after talking to Paola

Paola from Peru and I were just talking about the on-going problem of
fragmentation among our organization. She and I agreed that we need
some shared projects to which various chapters can contribute
independently. Free Culture TV (and/or Radio?) might be interesting
places to start.

It would be great if during the course of the year, every chapter was
able to submit a video or a bit of audio about their local experience
to share with everyone else. I'm not talking about the BBC, just a
minute or two to let everyone else hear your voices and see your
faces.

I'm going to set up some media-making events at the conference in
order to kick this off but you could start at anytime, of course.

What are some other simple activities we could do together?

I am always happy to participate in collaborative translation projects
to practice Spanish. Anyone have Free Culture-related material they'd
like in multiple languages?

I think this is a great idea, and am happy to help anyone/any chapter who needs a hand with video (whether that means simply getting up and running or turning out some tricked out HD/Ogg Theora video, I have plenty of practical knowledge).

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

This could totally work, assuming chapter members have access to cameras, etc. Would we want to set up an FC video blog or something to that extent?

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

I'm totally fine with having this be done through www.freeculture.tv .  There's not much infrastructure necessary, but this channel already has it in place.  I was already thinking that once the school year started up, we could distribute event videos through it, this plan seems like an upgraded and improved version of that plan.  (And of course, since I run fc.tv, I'm volunteering to do some legwork, but if anybody wants to work on this channel you're always welcome.)

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

I am 100% behind SFC having a video blog, it's a good idea which is long
overdue.

I'm not sure whether it should be on a separate website or not,
though... I think it would be fine to just use SFC's existing blog for a
videoblog. Wordpress already automatically does enclosures that will
work in Miro, with a little tweaking we could have an excellent Miro
video channel through our Wordpress blog. In fact, if you subscribe to
the SFC blog right now in Miro, you should get the MP4 download of the
Sparky promo video that I created (if you wait too long, it'll be too
far back in the RSS feed to be picked up, though).

To make the video portion of our blog awesomer, we could install the
suite of plugins from <http://showinabox.tv/>, or perhaps the Podcasting
plugin developed through Google SoC at
<http://cavemonkey50.com/code/podcasting/>.

Let's not have 10 zillion SFC websites, keep the website creep to a
minimum ;-) That said, SFC videos certainly could also be
cross-published at www.freeculture.tv, along with any other relevant
free culture material that fits that channel.

Peace,
~Nelson~

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

I agree with the idea that website creep is not optimal, and I propose we stop before we hit 10 zillion.

I DO think, though, that the videoblog could benefit by being separate from the main blog.  I am in favor of using freeculture.tv for at least cross posting whatever goes up on our videoblog, and potentially as the main source.  Maybe a solution like boing boing has, where tv.boingboing.net is the main source, but every episode is crossposted on regular boing boing, would be optimal...

Of course I'm biased, but I think there's a good reason for freeculture.tv, and I think this kind of application is perfect for it.

I think Parker is right. Two is sufficiently less than 10 zillion. And it sounds like, since freeculture.tv was built for this, it will be less work to set up and maintain.

The other advantage is that freeculture.tv has a baked in audience of thousands of people... it has already been boing boinged and featured on the Miro Guide.

Peace,
~Nelson~

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

there's no doubt that freeculture.tv is the way to go. i should have
been more explicit of my endorsement of this earlier.

also, dean is humble not to pimp: http://makeinternettv.com one of
the best howto's on internet video on da webs.

If we are deciding to make freeculture.tv the primary outlet for SFC
content, can we make it an official SFC project, or at least co-sponsor
it or something? I always like being able to point to things that SFC
is currently working on. We could even put it on the front page to
replace the "care package shipping" project.

Let's just make vids and see what happens.

Yeah, I don't really see the need to cross this bridge until we have content we're making.

So go forth and edit!

Argh, sorry about that. I was going to say that I think we should use fc.tv and have a video feed from it featured on the front page of fc.o.

Also, is there some way to watch its videos in-browser? Sorry to say it, but most users still want to watch videos that way..

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

If we used the SFC Wordpress blog, we could easily use the Podcasting
plugin or Show in a Box plugins that I mentioned earlier to make the
videos available in the browser :P

http://cavemonkey50.com/code/podcasting/
http://showinabox.tv/
http://vpip.org/

They use open source players such as the Cortado player for Ogg Theora, etc.

My understanding is that Parker is manually hacking together RSS feeds
for freeculture.tv, and that there is no software installed which
could let you watch the video in a browser. Is that correct, Parker?

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

You might want to use mvEmbed -- it lets you embed theora using html5
<video> tag, and supports a variety different media players -- vlc,
mplayer, quicktime via xiphqt, and even native ogg support as found in
the most recent firefox 3.1 nightlies. java/cortado is the player of
last resort.

Re: Random thoughts after talking to Paola

How are your videos coming along? I'm almost done with mine first one!
(It is very short.)

FC videoblog + website creep

It would not be more work to add videoblog functionality to the SFC
blog, since as I pointed out earlier that functionality is already
included and working, you can subscribe to our blog in Miro today. We
could just make the interface nicer and prettier, both for people
posting video and for people watching video on our website, but that is
not absolutely necessary.

Generally, I think we should host SFC-specific, SFC-branded content on
<http://freeculture.org>. Let's keep in mind Kevin's original idea,
which was: "It would be great if during the course of the year, every
chapter was able to submit a video or a bit of audio about their local
experience to share with everyone else." Sounds like a pretty
SFC-specific project. I think that we could easily create enough
SFC-specific content to merit a SFC-specific video channel. Do we want
<http://freeculture.tv> to be a forum for SFC, where we can "let
everyone else hear your voices and see your faces", as Kevin said? or
something independent and separate from SFC? If the latter, then maybe
it's better to have the SFC blog be the SFC video channel.

Peace,
~Nelson Pavlosky~
