Do you know what time? I had a quick scan of the playback at
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/listenagain/ for 8th March, but I
couldn't find it.

And today's _Working Lunch_ on BBC 2 mentioned Osbourne and then
followed up with at least a five minute slot on what free software is,
putting URLs up for Ubuntu, Mandriva, Fedora, Mozilla (Firefox), Open
Office, and The Open CD. It wasn't perfect, but they did say to people
that Linux may be for the more competent computer user, but you can mix
and match and there's nothing to stop you getting Open Office and using
it on your existing Windows PC.

There was also a story about Bristol? council avoiding GBP1.5M on
Microsoft Office for the next five years, instead spending GBP186K on
Star Office.

They've got "Watch again". I can't use it unfortunately else I'd give a
more accurate report.

Tomorrow is "Technology" day on the programme, apparently, and they said
they wanted questions emailed in. Might be a good opportunity to ask
more about free software, etc.

Here's the Conservative's page on Osbourne's speech.

    http://www.conservatives.com/tile.do?def=news.story.page&obj_id=135394

"In a speech at the Royal Society of Arts, he also announced the
appointment of Mark Thompson, of the Judge Business School at
Cambridge University, to advise the Party on how to make Britain the
    open source leader in Europe."

Cheers,

Ralph.

And the Conservative Party's own page (almost the same, but a few more
sound-bites) is at:
http://www.conservatives.com/tile.do?def=news.story.page&obj_id=135394

This is amazing, if it is followed through on, as opposed to being a stick to
beat opponents with. The Conservatives "getting it" before the other parties
- what an interesting notion!

How so? Aren't the other parties just copies of the Tories now? Certainly
New Labour are everything the Tories were in their last few years in
govt.

I feel compelled to point out that the Green Party England & Wales adopted a
platform in favour of free software and against software patents at our last
conference. Across Europe Green parties have spoken out against software
patents and Microsoft's monopoly power, and pressed for change in purchasing
policies to favour (or at least stop shutting out) free software. It would be
well worth any Scottish subscribers to this list pestering the Green MSPs,
and likewise if you live in a council with a good number of Green
councillors.

Then again, in the world of first past the post I understand that you mean
Labour and the Lib Dems when you say "the other parties"!

Kind regards,
Tom

Hello Tom,

It would be great if they'd actually put up a candidate in
my constituency, then we'd have a choice of Free Software-
supporting, potential MPs ;-)

That doesn't seem to be a valid URL, how do you get to it? Is it
today's programme, at:

http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/downloadtrial/fivelive/wakeuptomoney/wakeuptomoney_20070309-0530_40_st.mp3

or yesterday's which I can't see? (I can't listen to it on this system
to find out, I won't be on a system with sound until next week.)

It's yesterday's, and I just guessed the URL:
http://downloads.bbc.co.uk/rmhttp/downloadtrial/fivelive/wakeuptomoney/wakeuptomoney_20070308-0530_40_st.mp3
The Open Source bit starts at 19:52.

Due to the differences between legal systems, I haven't yet moved to
Scotland, but am in the process of doing so.

Why are you suggesting 'pestering' Green MSPs and Green councillors, the
May elections will be of concern to all levels of Local and National
government in Scotland, at least that was my understanding. Surely all
parties will be vying with one another to accommodate the wants and needs
of all those who have a vote, why limit your demands to just one party?

It also needs to be remembered that it can be just as effective to seek to
unseat those one disagrees with, particularly if one tells them why one is
doing so, before polling day, in a seat where the margins are close.
Politicians are very protective of their salaries and expenses, at whatever
level of government they operate, and for whatever party.

Oh sure, if you're not likely to ever vote Green, pester your preferred
candidates. Pester them all anyway, if you have the time. If your preferred
candidates don't win, pester those who do. I merely meant that whilst the
Green Party England & Wales and our sister party in Scotland have a pro-free
software platform, not every candidate will be particularly cognisant of the
issues, so pester them into fulfilling their party's pledge :-)
