eCUPS installation & setup issue

I'm trying to get eCups set up on a PC with a Laserjet 5L via parallel
port. (The standard driver occasionally chokes when printing from
Seamonkey, and graphics output is terrible.) The WPI package installs
fine, and web administrator comes up OK, but when I go to add a printer,
nothing is available. I tried a bunch of times (at least 10-20
attempts) but the LPD option never popped up, and two of the other 4
network options (IPP and AppSocket, I think) appeared only once each.

The PC has a second OS installation (rescue partition, but also to
compare SNAP with Panorama and for stuff like this.) I tried installing
eCUPS on that. It went fine. The first attempt to add a printer did
not present the LPD option. The second attempt did. And I installed it
and it works great. It's slower than the native driver, but the
graphics are noticeably improved.

The only problem is that it outputs an extra blank page at the end of
the job. I went into the administration area to check the default
settings, but it wouldn't load. So that's a slight problem.

The bigger problem is why on the primary installation I can't get a
printer set up. The other bit of weirdness is that I can't run Firefox
on that installation. It tells me that Firefox is already running and I
need to terminate it before I can start it. I tried running it using
the Run! utility but that didn't work either. Top didn't show Firefox
running, so I'm at a loss on that one. I don't know if this is
relevant, but I thought I should mention it.

Thanks,

Dave

Did you hit 'Continue' on the 'Add Printer' page without choosing anything?
Usually everything shows up after that. This is a reported problem... (I
assume 'Parallel port adapter' appears in the hardware manager)

Yep, I did the 'continue' thing about 30 times - it didn't work.

I'm not at that computer, but I'm fairly certain it appears in the
hardware manager. Also, I can print via parallel port using the
included LJ driver.

Make sure the OS/2 printer system itself is working. I suggest you
create a new printer object with a driver like "Generic Postscript Printer"
and output port set to "print to file". Then use the WPS context menu to
set this to the default printer, and try printing to it from AE or other
applications. If it still blows up, you'll know the problem is in your
system (specifically, the PM printing subsystem) and not with CUPS. If
it does work, then you can continue with trying to debug CUPS.

Firstly, do I read correctly that you're successfully printing using a
printer connected via parallel port? If so, that's the first successful
report :)

Hi, Paul. No problems with the delay - I understand "busy" and
considering how much porting you do for the community, it's not a problem.

I'm successfully printing using a printer connected via parallel port
but using the IBMNULL printer object/lpd workaround detailed in the
eCUPS "howto" guide.

I must be some kind of genius -- It's only taken me a full week to
determine that the maintenance partition is on the same PC as the
working partition. So I fired up Seamonkey to test printing 3
problematic e-mails using eCUPS. They all printed with absolutely zero
trouble. Well, near zero trouble. All three spat out an extra blank
page at the end of the print job. I have no idea why, maybe it's
IBMNULL's fault. I do see a "Form Feed Control" option in there (None,
Conditional, and Compulsory). It's on "Conditional" now. Should I pop
it over to "None"?

As my father is getting really, really, really aggravated by the

I left my original eCUPS printer installed in eCUPS, but I did try
CUPSWIZ. It's a nice interface and a fantastic idea. Unfortunately, it
didn't work for my application - Parallel port. I installed an IBMNULL
printer (to connect up with eCUPS via LPD) and then CUPSWIZ did create a
CUPS printer, but it crashed when trying to create a printer object.

I went into the web interface and the CUPSWIZ generated printer prints
out a test page, so that end works fine.

Crashed how, exactly? With an error message? A stack trace? A
POPUPLOG.OS2 entry?

An error message that the printer object was not created and to check
\var\log\cupswiz.l1 which says....

So it didn't actually crash, then. You worried me there.

The above is the error message, unfortunately it's meaningless.
That error code simply means "print job cancelled" - and as you saw
rinstprn.log (which I didn't bother quoting again) contains nothing
useful.

Clearly rinstprn.exe is unable to create either the print queue, the
device, or the WPS object. MAYBE the first, since the log does
actually get to the 'Intalling queues' part.

What version of SeaMonkey are you using? IIRC anything before 2.1, and
anything later than about 2.33, have fairly serious problems with printing.

I missed what printer model you're using, BTW.

Seamonkey 2.7.2. That's why I wasn't overly concerned, as I know there
have been problems with printing from various Mozilla builds. Like I
said, for my system (Core i7, Laserjet 4P) I was kind of cool with it,
especially since the workaround (print to file, drag file onto printer
object) worked fine.

But, on the Athlon II (Laserjet 5L) when simple text-only e-mails
refused to print, well, then I got concerned. [As an aside, 5L printing
has been flaky ever since eCS 1.1 or 1.2. Through the years I've
backleveled a number of PCL drivers to get one that wouldn't randomly
drop letters from text pages.] Anyways, on the Athlon II maintenance
install, I fired up Seamonkey and printed out 3 problem e-mails (that
crashed Seamonkey or spewed a gibberish page and then froze the entire
system) using eCUPS and they all seemed to print fine. (I didn't
actually fully review 12 pages of text.)

Yeah, known problem. Apparently recent Mozillas can only print once,
then any subsequent attempt will crash (IIRC).

If you want to print seamlessly from SeaMonkey, use version 2.1 or 2.33.

> 4P on the i7 and 5L on the Athlon II.

There's a wide choice of drivers you can use with CUPS in that case, but
I really think your problem is happening at an earlier point in the chain.
