Re: ajug-members Digest, Vol 57, Issue 6

I'd look for small software companies and be persistent with them. Demonstrate drive and a willingness to learn. Remember that you're appealing to an entrepreneur; the right flavor of annoying persistence can play in your favor. Be clear that you're willing to work for a poor college student wage and that you're cool with being a short term contractor. Small companies have the flexibility to take a risk on you and their generally limited capital might even make it a worthwhile risk for them.

My experience has been that you'll need to try and land a job in software
support or testing first.  Although in today's world you might want to try
your hand at building your engineering experience by developing and
marketing an Android app.

Ian,

I used Craigslist to find my first software job, then a year later I put my
resume on Monster and had a recruiter call me for my second.  Now most of
my opportunities are word of mouth from people I've met over the last 7
years.  So I suppose the internet is the answer to the where question.

For the how you have two things, your resume and your interview.  I should
be able to glance at your resume in 15 seconds and get an idea of what you
are interested in and how much stuff you know.  If you exaggerate on your
resume your interviewer will know and will knock you around about it. As
far as the interview goes, understanding the basics of lots of things goes
a long way.

In what I've been trying to hire for this includes

  - HTTP (GET vs Post, Request vs response, redirect vs forward)
  - Core Java/OO (Gang of 4 Patterns,Interface vs class vs abstract class,
Generics, Collections, basic syntax [try/catch/finally, static,
  public/private/protected])
  - HTML/Css/javascript (box model, block vs inline, various css
attributes, css selector syntax, javascript syntax and jQuery)
  - Java Web (MVC Model 1 vs Model 2, front controller pattern,
  servlets/filters, experience with a framework)
  - SQL (select, join [inner, outer, right & left], aggregation, update,
  delete)

The position we are trying to fill requires at least a basic functional
understand of all of these with some real strong scores in at least one of
these.  If this were a more Jr. position in Java web development (as you
would be looking for), you could probably get by with knowing a little bit
about all of these, but not having any experience in code.

What type of programming interests you?
