Cendyne external USB cd-rw

Hello,
Well after years of faithful service, my HP CD writer appears to be in
the throes of death. It responds for only a couple minutes after boot
up then 'disappears' completely. It seems to lose power and won't even
resond to the eject button. So, BJ's wholesale has a Cendyne external
USB 2.0 cd-rw for $29.90. I hadn't even thought about an external drive
as an option but the price is oh so tempting. Anyone have any
experience with these?

Re: Cendyne external USB cd-rw

I am not sure, but ever experience i have had with USB or FireWire
cd/dvd drives has been that if you open them, they end up being an ide
drive with some kind of adaptor hooked to the back. For that price, it
cant hurt to pick one up and open it to check. of course YMMV.

Re: Cendyne external USB cd-rw

Sorry I don't have any useful info, but is this price after a rebate?

Re: Cendyne external USB cd-rw

That is the shelf price. No rebate as CenDyne has gone out of business
I believe. They also have internal IDE drives for $44.99.

Re: Cendyne external USB cd-rw

Not with that one, but I used a USB sony one that worked like a charm.

Mandrake saw it and configed it no problems at all!
