Help needed with Linux in school

Dear Friends,

I am a teacher in a government school in Viluppuram. We have received
computers with Linux installed as part of ELCOT initiative. We face many
problems in using the systems to teach our students.

Would be grateful, if anyone in Vilupuram area will visit our school and
help us start using the computers.

Best regards,

Ma Sivakumar

Re: Help needed with Linux in school

Well,
I am also a teacher , handling CS for Higher Secondary,

Since Govt schools got SuSE linux, you have to introduce to the students
about SuSE
For the students , it is learning for the First Time, where us, we
have started from DOS, Unix then GUI at Win 3.1 Win 98,....WinXp ,
So it is easy for the students to learn Linux as first timer.

Then , Our learning system makes us to teach "Based on Book Content" [
The actual teaching should not based on book content ]
So, here are my suggestions.

# For C and C++, use "gcc" compiler, along with editors [ just Google ,
you will get better understanding.]
[ if you have any trouble, i will send you a simple presentation file,
where you can catch it ]

# For Star Office, use OpenOffice.
# For Electroni Work Bench, use "Logisim" [ search , download, install ]
# For HTML, use simple Editors
# For Windows XP , .......nothing to learn.

have a nice day

Can we, in ILUGC, take turns to visit the site and help out these folks ?

If anyone is willing to join me, we can plan for our first visit next
weekend (weekdays it's not possible for me due to commitments in day
work). Of course, the teachers and students should be available during
our weekend visit.

Mohan, Ramanathan

I also told Mr. Senthil that if he can arrange a group of teachers, I will
travel to Vilupuram this Sunday for the first session. If we can go as a
group, it would be very effective.

I am trying to contact Mr. Senthil through the people who organized the
Padhivar Pattarai. I will send the contact details as soon as I get them.

Hi,

It was also proposed that there will be training to the staffs by
ELCOT and it appeared that they outsourced it to some one.

What's the Status?

Being may, Its likely that all schools around will be having Holidays.
Will it be possible for you to convene a meeting of all Staffs in and
around Vilupuram to assemble, on one day.

Hope everyone will be facing similar issues. That will make it even easier.

It is very difficult to convince every-one to come to single place
on holiday that too with-out TA,DA, ...:) My suggection is invite
the OP to NRC-FOSS to spend few days over there to understand the
basics of "SUSE" Distro.

Bye :)

Re: Help needed with Linux in school

Friends,

The mail was typed in by me when I was in Vilupuram on May 12, 2008 to
participate in a Valaipadhivar Pattarai.

We helped the participants to create Email accounts, blogger accounts and
learn to read and write in Tamil. Towards the end of the day, I started
talking about Tamil operating systems and brought up Linux.

Atleast half a dozen persons immediately started showing interest. Mr.
Senthil is one of them.

Schools have received computers, no one to teach them how to use. They want
to install Windows if possible. The department says, you do whatever you
want, we will not question. But the teachers are not taking any risks. In
many places computers are kept unused.

I am sure similar conditions prevail in other parts of the state also. I
suggested to Mr. Senthil to send a mail to ILUGC and typed the gp message
from his email account (newly created).

Mr. Senthil promised that he will arrange a meeting of teachers from all the
schools in the area for a training session. I have suggested that we can
solve their problems in one or two sittings and get the computers working in
the schools.

I am not sure, whether he is conversant with emails and mailing list
communications. We need to do something before the new school year begins.

Best regards,

Just need to have one info.

What happened to training program initiated by ELCOT for these staffs?

Didn't it happen at all?

Want to know this for information.

The teachers did not get any training it seems. They say they are not able
to install any programs from the CD provided by ELCOT themselves.

Re: Help needed with Linux in school

Mr. Senthil (9842377002) telephoned me. He said that, discussing with CEO,
he will try to arrange a training session for teachers in the district
during the first week of June (after schools reopen).

I told him that others from ILUGS and NRCFOSS might contact him for making
plans.

As immediate activity, he is eager to put the computers in their school (Sri
Nataraja Middle School) into use. Let us make further plans and visit
Viluppuram this weekend. Teachers from other nearby schools may also come
for training.

in the meantime, we can take up Bharathi's suggestion. We could organize a
few days' training session for 2-3 lecturers at NRCFOSS, AU-KBC Research
Center.

we are also planning some training programme (towards last week of May) at
Anna Univ, Trichy. Can give you a clear picture about it in a few days.

Re: Help needed with Linux in school

I have checked with Ms. Nirmala, HoD /CSE of IFET, Villupuram. She is
willing to help out, but is busy with some official work for next 2-3 days.
I have also requested her to consider organizing a 2-3 day FOSS workshop for
school teachers in that area in her college. We should be able to convince
the management too.

If I could get the Villupuram school contact numbers / names, I could put
them on to Ms. Nirmala to initiate direct interaction.

Any other suggestions for NRCFOSS/ILUG-C joint actions are also welcome.
