1. Which movie player are you using?
2. What movie format are you trying to play?
3. What is your system configuration, especially the graphic card?

In the meantime, install VLC player.

Can you please tell us about the video format that you are using and the
player you use.
Also, is this video present in your hard disk or is being read from a DVD/CD
player?

Highly unfortunate, which means you would have missed many interesting
clips/videos :) - probably you might find a solution after giving the
answers.

Venkat

[1] What format of video?
[2] Which players?
[3] What codecs got installed?

Try running the player from command line with the file path as the
argument, like 'totem /home/magesh/videos/thevideo.avi'
When you try to play a video file which need codecs, Ubuntu asks whether
it can install codec if the corresponding format has one and if given
yes for the installation, it installs the codec and plays the file.
Sometimes it may need to close the player and open it again.

Which channel? #ubuntu? Try #ubuntu-in from next time, which is the
channel of the Indian team.

Again which file format and which player? Can you please try doing the
above said "run command from terminal" procedure and show us whatever
comes on the screen (Please paste the output from the terminal on to a
pastebin like pastebin.com and give the link for the page to us)?

Re: new user magesh has a problem

Mahesh,
1. Linux is basically to support Open and free Source formats as per GPL
2. Ubuntu's specialty is within its boundaries of Open and free source. But
it will supply restricted drivers for users with intimation of restriction.

Normally Ubuntu supports ogg and FLAC file formats for Audio and Vedio.
Please post the file format you used and try to get required codecs

For Mr. Kenneth,
Sir,

I accept Mandriva is more flexible than Ubuntu but It is not an single
solution. It is one of the way.

I am sorry for this.

Padhu,
Ooty.

If you are trying to play VCDs, or Dat files, try installing Gxine...It will play all the .dat files.
