Anniversary

On the 25th August 1991 the following message appeared on the newsgroup comp.os.minix:

Hello everybody out there using minix-

I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big
and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has
been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like
any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix; as my OS
resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-sytem
due to practical reasons)among other things.

I've currently ported bash (1.08) an gcc (1.40), and things seem to work.
This implies that i'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd
like to know what features most people want. Any suggestions are welcome,
but I won't promise I'll implement them :-)

Linus Torvalds torvalds-38tcgYaKYU0jxog6bMmI4Mc4bpwCjbIv@public.gmane.org

Happy Birthday Linux!!!

Re: Anniversary

Oh god, not this again.

This is the anniversary of Linux - the announcement of the kernel
project, and has nothing to do with GNU. GNU was announced on
September 27th, 1983. So this is unrelated.

Furthermore, note how Linus says he has ported bash and gcc from
Minix, which in turn were ported from GNU. So shouldn't this be GNU/
MINIX/Linux?

So, with that reasoning, shouldn't I be using GNU/MINIX/Linux/SuSE/
OpenSuse/11?

I hardly think the over complication of names is going to help promote
Linux in any way. Just see the recent article released by the
government which talks about the GRIMP.

Re: Anniversary

Did you know that Linus actually wanted to name the project 'Freax' ?
It was actually another guy (Ari Lemke) who came with the mockup of
'Linux' which
was than widely accepted by the community.

Re: Anniversary

Nah. I don't agree - for two reasons. First and most importantly, because it annoys Richard Stallman.

Second: What about X11? To many people it's as much a part of the operating system as the find utility by GNU. What about KDE? With Linux, the line between operating system and applications is more blurred than with Windows since in Windows you have to pay extra for everything, whereas in Linux you get everything packaged on the same CD. So you're running GNU/Linux/Xorg/Qt/KDE/OpenOffice.org/Mozilla/Ximian/etc.... or just Linux :)
