St. Paul's College goes Microsoft

<http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/infotech/view/20080711-147772/RP-college-replaces-open-source-system-with-Microsoft-OS>

Folks - why are we still getting press releases like this one? Shouldn't we be covering the schools already? I mean, PLUG should help schools to keep using FOSS. The reason that it is confusing their students is very lame. Whoever has any connections with St. Paul's, can you please let them see the light? :)

Re: St. Paul's College goes Microsoft

There is a naive class of Linux support who don't take OS migrations
as seriously as they would, say, network equipment migrations, and so
we end up with problem cases like this. The fact is that Operating
Systems are likely to be a class more complicated than network
equipment migration is often neglected and users are sometimes left to
fend for themselves after initial setup is done.

This is sad, because a job well done for the implementer could have
translated into good, semi-passive income.

See I think the moral lesson in the article is not that St Paul
shifted to Microsoft. It's that St. Paul employed First Datacorp as an
implementer. The key there is that companies like these are likely to
be good at doing what they do: analyzing situations, explaining to
decision makers, proposing solutions, and following through to the end
to make sure their solutions look good. That's what the business
really is, and that doesn't change whether you're getting paid to
deploy open source or proprietary stuff. Someone who wants to do a
serious deployment for people who think business concerns has to be
good at the above. It's just a guess that the one who did St. Paul
probably missed it.

So, I wonder who? Was it internal?

I am sure FUD was involved here. I recall that in UP Diliman, the
student council first resisted the idea of going open source. Back
then they didn't know what FOSS was all about. I am sure that they
will eventually see the light but I agree that someone should pay them
a visit or dig deeper. Sometimes news reports leave out some details.

I am not necessarily against having MS in their labs but I think it
would be an injustice not to have FOSS there as well.

Anybody at least know how to contact them via email?

Re: St. Paul's College goes Microsoft

UP is a different matter.  They have an ideology more in line with open source.

I do agree that FUD was involved.  St. Paul wouldn't have the ideology to counter the FUD.

We keep forgetting, the only active PLUG is this mailing list. The legal entity known as PLUG is in legal
limbo. Gary tried to resurrect it. But he can't do it by himself, so more people should step up.

Maybe a microsoft-based software solution/strategy was more
appropriate to satisfy their IT/business requirements, current issues
and problems.

Re: St. Paul's College goes Microsoft

Perhaps politics played a significant role that is why the shift or the FOSS implementer is no longer with St. Paul or worse the Supplier left them high and dry.

Re: [SPAM] - Re: St. Paul's College goes Microsoft - Email found in subject

In an ideal world, I would say that Linux didn't meet the business objectives thus M$ replaced it. In the end, customers would use another solution if one cannot address their business requirements.

In the real world (that we are in), there are so many factors to consider why Linux was booted out from this institution; And I've seen people selling solutions that are not needed in the first place (and IT has to fend off the issues that these "solutions" bring to their system).

We can only speculate on what had happened. (It would be great if the decision makers in this particular school could share the facts).

On the other hand, this is just one school. It might be worthwhile asking the PLUG what we can done collectively on those institutions currently running Linux-based solutions - are they still satisfied? Those institutions' interest in Linux can still be strengthened further.

In the end, if Linux solution doesn't address the (personal) interest of the decision makers, technology doesn't really matter. I always remember what sales persons would say - meet with the decision makers and not the IT administrators since the former has the check and not the latter. And this is one of the realities that is beyond Linux.

Re: St. Paul's College goes Microsoft

Snipped from the article:

"Students, she said, were often using Windows in their home, thus the confusion in the use of applications."

If people are used to a certain operating system + application combination, it would make sense to use that familiarity to avoid training required to use another OS + apps combination. Perhaps we have to look into this first.
