what's HAL?

hello -

i've just installed debian sarge for the first time on a funny little
gimmicky "entertainment centre" i.e computer - and noticed during startup
and in .xsession-errors that there seems to be a problem with HAL. During
startup, the installation can't start HAL.

What's HAL? and where would I start looking to fix the problem?

cheers
diane

HAL:

http://www.freedesktop.org/Software/hal

I haven't used HAL much, but my understanding is you need the 2.6
kernel, with dbus, and udev for HAL to work right... maybe I'm wrong
there...

Hopefully I put you in the right direction...
