[OT] - Macbooks.

My wife has recently got an iPhone and the thought of "jailbreaking" it
to get it working on Linux is unwelcome.

She has been using Ubuntu for a while and doesn't want to go back to
Windows. Hence Mac.

I've never used one and she will only use:

* iTunes
* Some photo program
* A web browser
* Some form of office suite

Any hints for a novice Mac shopper? Any recommended shops in Adelaide?

I apologise if this post is too off Linux for you.

Cheers

Piers

Re: [OT] - Macbooks.

Thank you everyone for their input and suggestions - it was very much
appreciated. My wife is the owner of an MacBook Pro. The unfortunate
part is while we were out getting the laptop, the cleaner knocked the
phone off the kitchen bench which has shattered the glass making using
the cool interface a somewhat bloody affair (and making her immediate
need for a Mac limited). Now we have to talk to our Tesltra rep to get
it fixed.

I guess I'll just to have to use her new laptop for music editing until
her phone comes back from the shop...!

Thanks again everyone.

Cheers

Awww but Ubuntu runs so nicely on my shiny new MacBook

Trained well(ish) :)

Rhythmbox works well for the music on Ubuntu IF you don't have any protected music in your library.
Auto-detects my iPod and everything.

Safari comes on Mac, Firefox is a better install in my eyes. Xee is a good picture viewer. I have yet to find a
good photo program on the Mac. iPhoto works to store and view and rip out red eyes but that's really the
extent of what it's good for. Photoshop native is hard to come by and last I checked was a PPC binary which ran
in Rosetta (may have changed). An old boss of mine found that running the Windows version in Parallels was faster.

NeoOffice is the Office replacement. It's a Mac native version of open office rather than the OO.o port
which required X. You could also investigate the apple tools or whack in the CodeWeavers Wine for Mac and
install a real MS office suite if you have it.

> Any hints for a novice Mac shopper? Any recommended shops in Adelaide?

I used the Apple online store. It worked out slightly cheaper than going to a shop but I did have to wait a few
days for delivery. The online store also means you have to use the online store's support if it breaks under
warranty - can be somewhat annoying.

> I apologise if this post is too off Linux for you.

Install REFit and Ubuntu and it'll be close enough.

An old boss of mine found that running the Windows version in Parallels was faster.

If you do want to run windows apps I recommend VMWare Fusion - it's a special Mac version of VMWare and has an awesome feature called Unity. Basically it allows integration of windows apps into OSX so they appear just like run just like normal OSX apps in their own window, but are being powered by VMWare in the background. Similarly the windows taskbar can appear down the bottom of one of the virtual screens. Performance is excellent and it can even link up to a Bootcamp partition with windows installed.

Unity is a rip-off of the Parallels feature called Coherence. To be honest, coherence is much better than
the VMWare equivalent. Parallels is a much nicer system.

I'd wait a couple more versions.  Its stability is... sensitive.

Parallels has most of those features with fewer downsides, IMHO.

Meanwhile, NeoOffice has already done that (several years ago), and
is based on the OpenOffice 2.x code base. Stable, mature, and rockin'.

You _are_ joking, aren't you? NeoOffice for spreadsheets corrupts
data badly (to the point where it renders the file on disk
unrecoverable).

I'm eagerly awaiting OOo v3 for Mac, hoping for a solution that doesn't suck.

Can you quote a test case example please?

I've yet to see a problem like this in NeoOffice, and I have found the package to be quite reasonable (for swiss-army-knife bloatware) on the Mac.

It would have been nice if the OO folks had leveraged the work of the NeoOffice crew rather than re-inventing the wheel.

Never had a problem. Not even a small problem. Been using NeoOffice
since shortly after it came out; while it was a rocky adoption when
the project first started, it just keeps getting better and better.

When was the last time you tried it?

I use it weekly to track some data, but always make a backup copy
before committing changes in case the corruption issue occurs.

It corrupts data say one in 5 or 6 saves, for this particular spreadsheet.

Considering the non-GUI bits are straight out of OOo, I find this
mildly astonishing.

Have you reported the bug? And how old is the version you use weekly?
Current version is 2.2.4 Patch 5.

No, I haven't. Using 2.2.2 patch level something (but just upgraded again).

The problem is that I'm not willing to supply my spreadsheet due to
the data in it, and there's little point in raising the bug unless I
can provide a regression test for it.

Yes, that's a cop out. I'd love to help fix it, but I'm a bit limited
here without test data I can share :(

Very few open bugs shown there, and none for SS that I can see.  Have you reported it?

I haven't had a problem with neoOffice on my aging powerbook, and I like
to think I use it at a level slightly above the average user. Maybe
it's the specific version you are using, or something else causing the
problem?

As always it comes down to your price / features / performance ratio.

I recently purchased a top of the line macbook pro and couldn't be happier - by far the best laptop I have ever owned. Since OSX is based on BSD I still feel quite at home on the command line and can run all my usual development tools without hindrance. OSX comes with almost all the apps you require, except for word processing - so you can just download open office and you're pretty much there. OSX has iPhoto which is probably good enough for most needs and is excellent at organising photos etc... and of course firefox is available on OSX.

sorry a bit off topic.. i own a macbook and a thinkpad.

whilst the macbook looks nicer, the thinkpad is about 100x more durable... and a few hundred dollars cheaper.. bottom of the line MacBook is $1500, bottom of the line Thinkpad T61 is $1200.... the thinkpad is also a higher spec'd machine

i've dropped my thinkpad onto tiles and accidentally put a glass of water into it... in both cases its been fine..

the macbook is a much more delicate machine .. as for apps.. they both do roughly the same job - you can find similar apps for both Windows/Linux on Thinkpad as you can for OS X on macbook..

the macbook looks nicer tho...

Any Macbook would probably do what is need, really; and might I say OS X
is the only GUI that I'll comfortably use without feeling the need for
the command line.

Hate to say it but Aqua / OS X make Gnome, KDE and all the Windows
interfaces look crap-tastic.

DSL

(1) I use Gnome generally because I don't have a desktop Apple machine
and it's the least crap-tastic of the open source desktops

Heya,

love my mac, but still prefer to develop on Linux :) I like the Next
Byte store on Glen Osmond road (but that may be because its walking
distance from the office!).
Oh, as for which mac, any of them will do. Just depends on your price
point and if you want laptop or desktop. Open Office or the mac native
port of it (who's name escapes me at the moment) will do your office
stuff. The you have iPhoto, iMovie, iTunes, GarageBand etc that comes
with every mac ( the iLife suite).

Cheers,

Ben.
