Errors installing the validator from source

Hi, I'm trying to install the validator on a linux server following
the instructions on http://validator.w3.org/docs/install.html

But I'm getting some errors on the CPAN installation. Some bundles
fail. Here's a report of the errors:

https://gist.github.com/3003171

Maybe I should choose another linux distribution? Which one is the
validator server currently using?

Thanks!

Re: Errors installing the validator from source

I've created a funded open source gig for someone able to update this
documentation:

Jaimie,
For my sins I maintain the w3c-markup-validator on Debian which feeds
into Ubuntu. So on those systems you should just need to do

"apt-get install w3c-markup-validator" as root.

Unfortunately the HTML5 bit has not been packaged. There is a bug report
for that at http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=631274 .

Hey, that's awesome news! I'll try it and tell you how it goes.

But it can be installed from source, I guess?

Yeah, but see my previous message to Nicholas: I've made some pre-built
jars that should obviate the need for you to build from the sources if you
don't want to.

I'd be very happy to work with you or anybody else who'd be interested in
packaging the HTML5 validator.

Something that would make it a whole lot easier: I recently made some
pre-built jars for it. Details here:

  https://bitbucket.org/sideshowbarker/vnu#readme

(See the part about "How to use the pre-built jars".)

You can get the jars themselves either by cloning that repo, or here:

  https://bitbucket.org/sideshowbarker/vnu/get/2759dcb15031.tar.gz

There are two jars: One is an 18MB jar that includes the validator code
plus the code for all of its third-party dependencies. The other is an
optional jar that just provides a command-line client.

There's a license file in the repo, as well as a file listing credits for

Michael, thanks a lot for that, this should make things much easier. :)

Installing this on Ubuntu Precise works fine, but it installs version
1.2 of the validator.

Is there an updated version to install the latest version, 1.3 ?

Thanks!

Jamie,
As far as Debian goes I'm sort of constrained by the upcoming freeze
and other duties. It's not the upgrade itself but a bug in a other
package. I can fix that probably quite easily, but I just don't have the
energy now. I'll pick it up next month. Then ubuntu will probably pick
it up sometime after that.
