Re: Wikimedia New England founding meeting in April?

I've been pretty dormant for the last few months, and lord knows I've
never had a great track record of attending these meetings, but I'll try
hard to make it as long as it's not during the first week of April, when
I'll be in California for work :-)

Re: Wikimedia New England founding meeting in April?

In the interest of getting the ball rolling, I have gone ahead and
created a meetup page and selected Saturday, April 22 as our target
date. Please see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Meetup/New_England

The idea here is that we haven't a well-attended event (like NYC's
Wikipedia Day mini-conference) in Boston in a long time. It would be
good to get as many people together as we can, and try to create
momentum for the future. For example, do we want to hold a Wiknic in two
months' time (from the meetup date)? What can we do to make sure New
England is active in this year's US Wiki Loves Monuments campaign? And
we want to raise awareness among the community about ongoing initiatives
like the education program and GLAM, and about the upcoming Wikimania in
DC this summer.

We'll need a venue. It sounds like the kind of event where we want a
conference room at a college or library, and I would suggest somewhere
in Boston proper is probably better than Cambridge. I can work on this,
but if anyone else has a good idea, please chime in.

Re: Wikimedia New England founding meeting in April?

The date's not set in stone. In fact, it happens to be the same weekend as the Free Culture Summit in SF, too, but I'm not sure if that really affects many people.

Any later, though, and I'm afraid we're getting into finals time and then summer for students (and, on a personal note, I'll be traveling); make it earlier and we're giving people that much less notice. (Also, not to seem indifferent to your situation, I imagine almost everyone else traveling from outside New England is coming from relatively nearby on the East Coast.) So, that's why I originally picked it, at least.

You could post two dates on the page to see who is available when, and put the word out.
I've been telling people it is the 21st, though :-)  It's good to have a date.

Thoughts on a Boston venue: if it's nice out, we could hold it outside on the Commons...

Re: Wikimedia New England founding meeting in April?

If it's nice out, I'd also like the idea of holding an event in the Commons.  The obvious drawback with an outdoor event is that weather makes attendance a real gamble.  Last year, turnout in Boston Common for the Great American Wiknic got dampened by rain, and last-minute weather developments threatened plans for Wikipedia Takes Boston (fortunately it turned out to be sunny).

If I can help make calls to potential venues, please let me know.  Boston Public Library asks that reservation requests be submitted at least 4 weeks prior to the event (see here), so if we want to meet there we should act quickly.  Once a date and venue is firmly set it'd be great to set up a geonotice.  If we'd like to boost turnout more, we could also leave notifications on the talk pages of all the Wikipedians in New England.

Cheers,
Eric

P.S.: I've signed up to attend on Saturday 4/21, but could also do Sunday 4/22 or Sunday 4/15.  I wouldn't be able to make Saturday 4/14, Saturday 4/28 or Sunday 4/29.

Re: Wikimedia New England founding meeting in April?

"It's good to have a date" was my theory in picking an arbitrary one to begin with, rather than "TBD". If it happens to be a bad one, though, I don't want that to stand in our way. I added a section on the meetup page for people to list their other preferences for dates.

I love having events outside, but I'm not sure it will work for what I hope we're trying to do this time. I think we'll want AV equipment, for example. Maybe the Second Annual Great American Wiknic? :-) For my part, I can inquire at Simmons College about a room, and I am also working my connections to see if there is any chance the JFK library would host us (which I think would be incredible). But the BPL would also be great, and even a little more central. Do you think you could find out what their availability is for the 21st or other weekends?
