A lot of Joerg's and my fixes are in the tree nowadays.

Does this mean I should be OK if pulling pkgsrc down from CVS? i.e. which
patches are still needed?

http://leaf.dragonflybsd.org/~joerg/pkgsrc/pkgsrc.diff

We're currently reviewing the patchset again.

The plan is to send as many fixes upstream as possible. It does not make
sense to maintain local hacks, otherwise the software will not get much
exposure and we want to be part of an app's possible test cycle.

If a package X does not compile, how will the dfly specific patches
be handled?

Are we going to manually pull down the patches from a specific
location? or have some hack to check is there a patch for that
package, fetch it and patch it? Will that not be very similar to
what we have/had with dfports?

ps: I never used pkgsrc before or know much about it.

Added to pkgsrc's patches dir for said pkg.
Patches will need to be sent upstream to third party project.

No, right now we're in the middle of a phase. Joerg has a <at> netbsd.org
commit bit now to work on pkgsrc, both Joerg and me have submitted a lot of
patches back upstream to the projects themselves to make the third party
source code compile with DragonFly.
There's still outstanding PRs and other support issues and to bridge that
gap we have the pkgsrc.diff up on leaf. This is a temporary measure.

It is nothing like dfports at all.

The wiki has a guide.
