mrg asked me to build a kernel with HZ=1024 and test.
It got worse.

Anything else I can test or instrument?

You could try turn off RAIDframe parity maps (which are a very useful
feature in general) with "raidctl -M no raid<n>", reboot your machine
afterwards and repeat your performance tests.

Oh, I was not aware that parity maps had made it into 5.1
