Installing NetBSD 5.1.2 on a Jornada 680 - new hpcboot.exe needed?

Hello,

Apologies if this shows up twice. I'm having trouble getting the
NetBSD 5.1.2 install kernel to boot on a Jornada 680. The hpcboot
progress bar gets all the way to the end and then the screen goes
black and the Jornada reboots. The list email pasted below suggests
that a new copy of hpcboot.exe would solve my problems. Does anyone
have a copy?

Thanks,

Jason M.

I recall I had some trouble initially that was resolved by getting an
updated hpcboot from someone off the list.

        Did I do something wrong?

Which "platform" (model) do you select in hpcboot menu?

Okay, it turns out that the issue was hpcboot settings. In case someone
runs into this here's the problem an the solution.

When launching hpcboot on a Jornada 680 with the install kernel and the
file system set to md, the Jornada would complain "Unable to allocate
memory". If I increased the program memory as high as it would go, the
hpcboot progress bar would get to the far right then the Jornada would
reboot and show the following error:

bootling cold
exception event code 60
TLB Miss/Invalid (store)

The solution is to set the file system to wd (even though there isn't yet
a ffs file system on the flash card.

There is one more issue. The ramdisk doesn't appear to have sysinst. I
just get dropped at a shell prompt. There are utilities on the ramdisk
including "install" and "upgrade" in the root of the file system. But when
run each utility complains "Can't open //install.md" There's nothing in
the mailing list archives with that string. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Jason M.

sysinst was never taught how to deal with quirks of hpcsh, since in a
typical setup you want dual-fs CF card with FAT partition that
contains hpcboot and FFS partition that contains the system.

I guess there's very little motivation to invest any time in that now.
The machines are more than a decade old and are rather underpowered,
so the user base is tiny.

It's a shame someone doesn't make a machine with the same form factor
but more modern power.

The Viliv N5 is close to the same form factor, but unfortunately the
keyboard is horrible.

Sysinst pops up just like any other port -- Awesome! I'm running through
the install now. Thanks!
