Configuring X11 to run in my 5000/25

Stupid question: where can I find some info on how to
configure X11 to run in my 5000/25 running 1.6.1? I did try simply
typing startx -- just for the heck of it -- and fell on my face:

katri# startx

QIOCGINFO ioctl failed: Permission denied
_X11TransSocketUNIXConnect: Can't connect: errno = 61
giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 61): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.

Because of the way X works on pmax systems, you need to recompile
a kernel with OPTIONS=INSECURE in your kernel config file. All the kernels
in the distribution ship without this (for security reasons obviously).
Last I checked, this prevents X from working on most systems.

X11 server on 1.6.1 : working or not ?

There is a PR #17894 about the X server problem
(http://www.NetBSD.org/cgi-bin/query-pr-single.pl?number=17894)

BUT for 1.6_BETA5 NetBSD 1.6_BETA5.

Is it still valid for 1.6.1 and for the latest NetBSD-daily ?

A quick search for XdecNetBSD on google seems to answer yes to
both branches. (Unless you add the insecure kernel option)

That does not sound very fun or make much sense to me. Oh
well... I do wonder what really means to have an insecure kernel...

My 5000/25 decided to freeze

I had it running for a few days (less than a week). Twenty
minutes ago I went to open a ssh to it. Nothing. I try then use the
console. Nothing. Telnet. Same. So, I have to manually reboot the
beast. What could be causing that? HD going boink?

Improper/no SCSI termination, overheat, dirt, dust, failed power
supply fans, flaky power supply, bad motherboard, dirty contacts, bad RAM,
EMP, nearby lightning strike, Saint Elmo's Fire, noisy power, George
W. Bush, and sun spots!

Seriously though, clean and reseat everything, failing that, wash
with alcohol and don't blow yourself up doing it.

I have only the internal SCSI HD, a *huge* quantum Maverick
540S. Since it has its resistor packs, it should be terminated; I
hope that is what the machine expects. About the external connector,
must it also be terminated?

>overheat,

Will check that once I put the parts back in the machine and
let it loose for a while. What kind of temperatures should I expect
and where?

Fan seems to be working happily

	Cleaned!

X11 server on 1.6.1 : securelevel 1 vs. 0

OK.
I will try to install and run the X11 server with the newest NetBSD-daily.
First without insecure kernel option and, if not successfull, with.

But what are the practical implications of securelevel = 0 instead of 1 ?
Is it effectively less secure in the real life ?

(init(8)) says

0 Insecure mode - immutable and append-only flags may be changed.
All devices may be read or written subject to their permissions.

1 Secure mode - system immutable and system append-only flags may not
be turned off; disks for mounted filesystems, /dev/mem, and
	   /dev/kmem are read-only.

but this explanation is not very helpfull.

That doesn't make a lot of sense to me. Don't we emulate DEC's in-kernel
graphics interface for at least the original pmax hardware?
