How come yahoo is printing out highlighted full yahoo e-mail addresses in our replies all of a sudden?

It seems to have returned to normal but for a number of messages peoples full adresses were popping up. I saw
it too.

Here I am quoting myself, but I should also have mentioned that Email
and digest subscribers can usually see full addresses in the "quote
attribution" line (e.g. "On some-date, so-and-so@...
wrote:").

That has been true for a looooong time. For instance, I checked
a message in my email from Aug 2009, and the "quote attribution"
included the full address. (However, on the YahooGroups website,
this same address was hidden.)

To summarize, full addresses (in the "From:" header and in "quote
attribution") are pretty normal in emails and the digest. So it's
still not clear to me if we have a actual problem - further evidence
is needed.

Re: visibility of addresses

Below is the "quote attribution" line from Rogers recent message (also
quoting himself!). Anyway, he posts from the YahooGroups website, so
the email address is hidden (with the "..."). So to further clarify my
previous posts, email and digest subscribers will see full addresses in
"quote attributions" when posters post via email, and will see hidden
addresses if the poster posted from the web(!).

Re: visibility of addresses [was: Re: Parliment approves ...]

To figure out what's going on between full addresses appearing or
disguised addresses, Bob and I need to know several things:

1. where people are seeing the full addresses ("From" line,
quoted sections, ...)

2. how the people who seeing the problem are READING messages.
There are at least five ways to read canals-list messages:

- text-format email

- "fully featured" email

- reading messages on the yahoo website

- digest email from yahoo

- reading messages via "news"

3. how the messages exhibiting the problem were posted - email,
website, or news. (Once the messages in question have been identified,
the posting method can usually be determined from the message headers.)

Finally, it seems to me that this problem is only serious if
the addresses appear on the yahoo website, because then a temporary
subscriber could "scrape" the addresses for spamming purposes.
(Email and digest subscribers can always see the poster's full
address in the "From:" line, but one-message-at-a-time scraping
is not worth a spammers effort.) I ordinarily read the messages
by email, but I've checked a bunch on the website and haven't

I get CanalsList by email digest and can confirm that full email addresses are being received in every post.

I believe the "have-read" indication is performed by your web browser,
by comparing its "history list" to the links on the current page.
If so, this would mean that either:
- Yahoo has changed the links to the messages in some way
- your browser history is set to a day or less
- you switched between Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, or Chrome.
Each would NOT know what you read in the other browers.

The fact that this "have-read" indicator issue has migrated from canals-
list to cutweb suggests to me that YahooGroups is introducing some
change that results in different links from before. But it will be
interesting to see if this still happens to you every day.

Re: visibility of addresses [was: Re: Parliment approves ...]

And further to this whole thing, some email programs (like mine), do
NOT include the email address in the "quote attribution" line when
replying. E.g. a recent post of mine just shows:

Re: visibility of addresses [was: Re: Parliment approves ...]

I don't have any problem with the visibility of addresses.
But I do have one with the new format printing
every
word
on
a
new
line
like
this?
On the latest digest, #5148, I got the first of 7 messages printed correctly
("Nothing to do with boats" from Tinywaterhouse)
then every subsequent post was one word per line right to the end of Brian's
trip report?
Can we fix it? (where's BTB when you need him?)

Interesting. I received a private email earlier today with the same
problem (though in that case, the one-word-per-line started with the
second digest message, and the display corrected itself after
forwarding the digest to me).

The digest forwarded to me looked perfectly normal, as did the digest I
received normally in a gmail account.

The private emailer was, according to the mail headers, using
"Microsoft Office Outlook 11" and Derek, you appear to be using
"Microsoft Windows Live Mail". I'd be interested to hear from any
other subscribers using these and getting the digest - whether
they are seeing this problem or not.
