What makes a Deluxe?

I'm trying to figure out what the differences are between a standard and deluxe 96 v4. So far I figured out
that the Deluxe has the tach, chrome rings on the wheels, and a badge on the rear lid. Any other differences?
Where would I be able to find information like this about the differences between models?
Thanks in advance.

TK ....... the most visible difference is the twin chromed trim strips that run from the lower front fender, the lower door, and end at a chromed "stone guard" on the rear quarter panel. This trim is same as GT and MC models from earlier years as well as the std trim from 1970 models.

Re: What makes a Deluxe?

Speaking of the dual chrome strips on the doors of a Deluxe, can anyone steer me to a source for the clips to
hold that trim on the door. I need to replace four broken clips on my own car. If anyone has some spares, or can
recommend a source, I would be very grateful.
Thank you,
Chas

Re: Re: What makes a Deluxe?

We bought the last remaining stock from Saab USA Parts, and maybe some of Chip's stock about 10 years ago when I was doing my last MC850, and then Project Laura - the 1970 model 96 in 2003-04. One car takes 60 clips IIRC so we needed to make our own for most of the clips on Laura. We cut the formed channel heads off damaged clips and attached them to nylon "pecker heads" from Home Depot. On the most critical clips that attach the shortest chromed pieces (2 clips each) on the front fenders, we used nylon bolts with washers and nuts on the back side of the fender.

The Laura video shows the process of making clips........ wonder how they have held up over the years. Ray...... has Pat's car lost any?

"How many pecker heads does it take to restore an MC850?"... now we know!

Re: Re: What makes a Deluxe?

On my 96 I used modern body moulding clips. Found some at the auto parts store. Flat head, made of plastic with a stem that fits into the hole. ribs on the stem keep it in and the head can be trimmed with scissors to fit into the trim strip. A little dab of silicone helps secure them. Some had two heads on them for their real application, just cut off unneeded material.
Good Luck
Tom

Laura's clips started to fail a year ago, some came apart and some just wouldn't stay in... we found some from restoration specialists when we did Ray's 96 a few years ago , so after some digging around they found us some more for Laura.. a spring metal clip wire with a square head (that has to be bent down slightly) and fits into the strip tightly, then two springy fingers that snap into the holes..they work great and STAY in.. I've used them before and could always -- untill now -- been able to get them from the local body/paint shop.... Ray might still have the #, and the guy" name at RS that knows SAAB 96's ..

The Summer 2008 issue of Vintage Views has an article (and pictures) of what I came up with... It show the clip
from Restoration Specialties Supply, Inc. ( http://restorationspecialties.com ) in Windber, PA.
Download their catalog. Pages 121-125 show lots of the clips in various sizes. I don't remember exactly
which one it is now. :-(

Hello All,

Happy 4th of July.  I need some help.  I am a little embarrassed to say with all of the spare parts that I have for both stoker’s and V-4’s that I don’t have any bearings for the drive dogs.  I purchased a 96 wagon that came from Arizona and I am trying to get it back together.  I pulled the left driver from the transmission so that I could pull the engine and trans for painting and I noticed that the person who put the driveshaft back the last time forgot to put the bearings on the “T” that goes in the drive dog.  Does anyone have an extra set of needle bearings that I can purchase?

They sometimes slide off the T and drop to the engine floor or get
burried in the grease in the rubber boot. Did you look there?

(BTW, there should be 25 needles in the cup...)

Re: Inner CV was need some help with drive bearings

Ok, if I understand you correctly, the half shaft was installed without the needle bearings.  Has it been driven like that?  If so, while there may be some used ones out there, the bearing surfaces are likely beat to CaCa, wether it's the ones on the half shaft or the ones in the cup. If they are perfect then you are a lucky guy! And will then be installing someone else's used bearings on your half shaft.

NOT good IMHO.

No, I don't know of a better alternative but that's a lot of work to put in some questionable bits.
