Drop the politics, please...

In discussing his recently sold Mustang, "Ken" said: "If we had an American president, I'd still have it."

Will anyone join me in requesting that we keep nonsensical political remarks off this list? Plenty of other
spaces for such crap.

I'd drop the word "nonsensical" from the request to avoid the debate over whether something is nonsense or not.
How about just keeping all political comments out of the conversation? :)

I agree to keeping political jabs off the list, but I had just assumed Ken meant that he didn't live in the
United States... the President of France, for example, isn't an American...

Re: Re: Drop the politics, please...

Uncensored only means that posts don't have to be approved before they are distributed to the rest of the list members...which is a good thing.  It's not or shouldn't be an invitation to turn the list into a political soap box.  I'm all for political discourse and, contrary to Ken's suggestion, I couldn't care less whether his political comments are oriented toward the right, middle or left.  I just don't think it has its place here without turning the list into a mess (as I've seen happen in other places).

Comments like "If we had an American president, I'd still have it" inevitably spark a back and forth that has NOTHING to do with cars let alone Saabs or vintage Saabs.  If this was a message board it would be possible to contain those messages differently (e.g., in a politics forum or even a single thread) but since it's a mailing list (primarily) it means we all get bombarded with dozens of emails about something that just doesn't have a place here: politics.

Just my $.02.

Yes. One cool thing about this forum is that we can explore our shared knowledge and love for these old Saabs
regardless of possible chasms which stretch between us in other respects. It would be silly to either
discount -- or give greater credence to -- the Saab-related information we trade based on our respective
politics, no? So lets not clutter the list with such references.

Re: Drop the politics, please...

Here's another perspective.

While this forum is for the discussion of vintage Saabs, we're all people- people from different
backgrounds with different experiences and different interests. I have no problem with passing
references to such things. That's how I come to know most of you guys as real people, not one-dimensional.

Andy is a good example. When I learned of his passing, I thought back to all his stories posted here. I
remembered his love of dancing first off.

So I think it's fine to have passing references to other marques, families, jobs, and gasp...even politics
and religion. That's what freedom is all about. No one should hijack the discussion to go off topic and
that's happened a few times in the past, but it seems to self-correct pretty quickly.

In this particular case, it certainly was a "shot". I saw it and thought about it for maybe a few seconds,
scratched my head and moved on. I left it as that.

I view this forum as a group of friends with a common interest and passion. In fact, I enjoy some of the more
personal comments since it allows me to know you a little better via the black and white text.

From yer friendly Moderator.........

When Chip set up this group almost 14 years ago....... Here's the description he posted in January 1999, and
I don't recall that it has ever been revised.

Key words are: Open, Uncensored, and ...... Unmoderated in the title.

It's also apparent that Chip intended a focus, not only on Vintage Saabs, but also on their owners. Read it
below, copied directly from our VSAAB List homepage <http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/vSAAB/>

*********************************************************************************************
Description (Edit)

Open, Uncensored Forum.

Discussion, diagnosis and treatment of out-of-production 2-digit Vintage SAABs and their owners.

*******************************************************************************************

An option exists for the Moderator to get involved if there becomes a need to resolve issues of spamming or
repeated violations of the spirit of the list. This group tends to be quite well behaved and we have had
little reason to put members on notice, to moderate their individual posts, or to ban members from
posting. The current 514 members seem inclined to be self-policing, which I like.

My job as Moderator currently involves mainly the approval, or rejection, of requests to subscribe to the group.

I still think politics should be avoided. On the other hand, when that unpatriotic left leaning anarchist suggested that our President isn't American, it was all I could do to keep myself from debating him on this group.

Here's another perspective.

While this forum is for the discussion of vintage Saabs, we're all people- people from different backgrounds with different experiences and different interests. I have no problem with passing references to such things. That's how I come to know most of you guys as real people, not one-dimensional.

Andy is a good example. When I learned of his passing, I thought back to all his stories posted here. I remembered his love of dancing first off.

So I think it's fine to have passing references to other marques, families, jobs, and gasp...even politics and religion. That's what freedom is all about. No one should hijack the discussion to go off topic and that's happened a few times in the past, but it seems to self-correct pretty quickly.

In this particular case, it certainly was a "shot". I saw it and thought about it for maybe a few seconds, scratched my head and moved on. I left it as that.

I view this forum as a group of friends with a common interest and passion. In fact, I enjoy some of the more personal comments since it allows me to know you a little better via the black and white text.

Mike,

I was going to say nothing further, but your remark requires response.

I am in fact Very Conservative, very patriotic, and proud of it. These are not characteristics that I see in
our current leader. My comment regarding his status as an American was-first of all-a mere side-note to an
entirely different subject, and in fact refers to his policies that appear not to be beneficial to
America. Perhaps you have not read his "unpatriotic left leaning anarchist" writings. I have. Perhaps
you have forgotten that he refused to salute our flag or permit it on his lapel & campaign vehicles. I have not.

I know-but momentarily failed to remember while writing that remark-that research has identified the
original buyers of these SAABs to be more Left-Leaning than buyers of practically any other model of car. I
blithely assumed that the passing 50 years would have tempered the thinking, making then more tolerant of
others.. I seem to have been wrong.

I am rather surprised that such an innocent remark would stir up such a hornet's-nest of political
correctness hate speech.

So, let the attacks begin, I am through.

As a Canadian outsider.
I remember the good old days in the 80's when Reagan was your king. It didn't matter if you were Red, Blue, anarchist or not. If ANYONE said said shit about your president you would punch them in the neck! You could be against his politics or plans personally, but if some foreigner from Canader EVER talked shit about him, a fight would break out. I miss those days when all americans were considered equally off their rockers by the outside world. You guys were clearly crazy, but at least you were all crazy together...

I agree that colourful comments allow us to know each each as real people. So we best not be too sensitive unless things go sideways and get it to rude, hateful, or racist. In which case that person should just get slapped with the ban hammer, no questions asked.

Back to SAABing!

I am taking my Sonett V4 to the local Scandinavian Day tomorrow and making sure those assholes in their Volvos don't steal the show.

Well said. Most Americans don't bother to figure out what the rest of the world thinks. For example, most Europeans see the libertarian point of view as at least socialist, and probably communist. As per Reagan? I wouldn't touch that one with a pole

Implying that the President is not an American is not an innocent remark. It's a known falsehood that John
McCain refused to endorse and that even Mittsy Romney won't endorse on the record (although he's happy to
let his teabagger backstabbers do his dirty work... he hasn't really been much for fighting his own
battles once he got beyond his youthful days of beating up gay kids in prep school.)

All those other innuendos, out-of-context attacks and outright falsehoods in your spew are cut from the
same cloth.

But we can't be surprised by this. I saw that lobbyist memo that got leaked to AlterNet about the American
Bankers' Association budgeting $18 million to pay shills to monitor social media and spam them with
neocon "talking points." I had thought they'd concentrate on the biggies such as Facebook, but maybe not
even little mailing lists are beyond the reach of this meretricious scumbaggery. After all, the Koch
brothers, Shel Adelson, the Coors family, etc., have basically unlimited money, and they're willing to
spend as much as it takes to drown out opposing voices and make themselves America's undisputed ruling class...

... see? This is what our whole list is going to turn into if we don't stop it now.

Well, now that we got all THAT sorted out.
Let us not forget why we are members on this group.
We all love old Saabs! For me,the older and more obscure the better.

Even though we have different personalities and where raised differently and even live in different
countries, we all share that passion.

I am fairly new to this group, but many of you know me.I have not been as active lately with conventions and
such, due to health and financial reasons, but I still love old Saabs.Hopefully I can share some of my
knowledge and learn some things.
I will also personally try to limit my political comments.I have even made up a whip using a worn out Reynolds
motorcycle chain(from my Triumph). I even added a old Bosch 2 stroke plug (for a Monte motor) to the tip for
extra penance. This will be used for self
flagellation in case I sin again!

Happy Saabing!

Bob

I suggest we adopt the classic "southern" approach:

People of quality never discuss politics, religion or sex in public.

Okay, maybe we keep the sex. We are Saab owners after all.

A priest, a rabbi and a stripper walk into a bar. The bartender looks up and says, "Hey, what is this - a joke?"

I agree with Eric,, knowing a little bit about the people on this list makes me feel like I know you all personally. SAAB people are an eclectic bunch, all walks, flavors, colors and (especially) Opinions... the people that have come through my shop over the years is a varied as they come,, it's the same with this list. the nice thing with the list is -- if you don't agree or like a post -- that DELETE button isn't far away....

and speaking of getting off topic,, what have you all been doing while we've been stuck on this "drop the politics" thread ??? anything SAAB related ??

Re: Drop the politics, please...

Well I'm trying to decide between ported, big-valve MSS heads, lower-spec big-valve heads from the Ashcrafts (half the price but with less go-fast stuff) and a pair of racing heads from a forum member (which may or may not be available) modified for dual header pipes.

Or just having my machine shop rebuild my heads to a TBD spec.

Re: Re: Drop the politics, please...

John ..... since you asked, I've been doing 3 things this week, Saab related:
1. Making plans to pick up the 1968 96 DeLuxe that I was given last week ....... ;-)
2. Showed my 1974 Sonett III, Project Lisa, at the Tuesday night weekly Wendy's Car Show, and
3. Trying to research the 45 new Saabs coming up for the (Saab dealer only) auction next week; part of the 950 impounded at ports in NJ, CA, & GA to see if I want to have a dealer bid on one for me.

Re: Drop the politics, please...

Respectfully, I disagree. I like to know a lot about the people on this list, but much like my friends in real
life, as opposed to cyber life, their political opinions add little or nothing to what I find interesting
about them. I enjoy learning about their interests, jobs, hobbies, experiences, families and
relationships, but I find that the political aspects seldom add much to the equation, and often cause more
tensions than any benefit that can come from including that stuff on a list like thiis, and even if you
agreed that it did serve some benefit, there is always someone who feels that his insults or opinions
warrant voicing even if they are distasteful or unproductive. It is just cleaner, and more productive for
the group to keep political dialog off the list entirely.
Can we put a fork in this now, as it is clearly overdone. Let's get back to Saabs!

Now that my back yard retaining wall/fence project is just about wrapped up, I'm getting ready to start tinkering with that 16k-mile '64 96 that I picked up off this list about a month ago:

Here's another perspective.

While this forum is for the discussion of vintage Saabs, we're all people-  people from different backgrounds with different experiences and different interests.  I have no problem with passing references to such things.  That's how I come to know most of you guys as real people, not one-dimensional.

Re: Re: Drop the politics, please...

I agree with Eric about enjoying the broad array of backgrounds, too.  I just think there's a difference between reading about people's lifelong experiences (whether or not they're car related) and unnecessarily politicized comments.  Saying, "Hey, I plan on spending the Summer working on [Obama's re-election] or [Romney's election]" is a lot different than saying "Hey, I plan on spending the Summer working [to keep that Warren Jeffs disciple out of the White House] or [to keep t hat Muslim Commie Foreigner from a 2nd term]."  It's the latter "stuff" I'd like to discourage only because these kinds of debates have a way of turning personal and heated.

Just my $.02,
-Eric (not in VT)

I agree with Eric,, knowing a little bit about the people on this list makes me feel like I know you all personally. SAAB people are an eclectic bunch, all walks, flavors, colors and (especially) Opinions... the people that have come through my shop over the years is a varied as they come,, it's the same with this list. the nice thing with the list is -- if you don't agree or like a post -- that DELETE button isn't far away....
and speaking of getting off topic,, what have you all been doing while we've been stuck on this "drop the politics" thread ??? anything SAAB related ??
John

Here's another perspective.

While this forum is for the discussion of vintage Saabs, we're all people-  people from different backgrounds with different experiences and different interests.  I have no problem with passing references to such things.  That's how I come to know most of you guys as real people, not one-dimensional.

Andy is a good example.  When I learned of his passing, I thought back to all his stories posted here.  I remembered his love of dancing first off.

So I think it's fine to ha ve passing references to other marques, families, jobs, and gasp...even politics and religion.
