Sonett V4 shifter coupler linkage repair

I need to repair the shifter coupler - called the "intermediate shaft, part 7176191" officially by Saab - in
my 1969 Sonett V4. This same part was used in all Sonetts up through 1969. See
http://saabsonett.org/illustration.php?group_match=6&section_match=3 for an illustration. I'm
talking about PART 32 in the drawing: there is a rubber donut in the middle with two universal joints on
either end of a shift, each protected by a rubber boot with a small spring inside.

My center rubber donut is warped. It is attached by large rivets on either side. Also, one of my springs in the
joint has broken. In addition, the taper pins that hold both shaft ends to the transmission rod (on one end)
and the shift shaft from the cockpit (on the other end) have been damaged and cannot be reused.

My questions:
 1. has anyone attempted to replace the center rubber donut, and if so how?
 2. any source or spec on the small springs that are in the joint covered with the rubber boot?
 3. any source for new taper pins, or other suggestions on how to best affix the shaft.

Or, do anyone have this entire assemble (#32 in the illustration referenced above) in good condition with a
rubber donut that isn't warped?

Thanks!

Re: Sonett V4 shifter coupler linkage repair

The holes in my 96's shift mechanism are also slighly wallowed-out and last time I installed those pins they
were looking like they wanted to pull through one end of the hub while still having a hair of play. Thinking
about it now, I'm not sure if I left it that way or "glued" it a bit with locktite retaining compound, but I
think I left it, with the intention of fabbing some oversize pins and reaming the hole.

On the other hand, pins with similar threading -- but only at the extraction end of the pin -- are sold at
McMaster Carr and I've got an idea that one could nontheless put them to use: perhaps a small hose clamp with
a small hole strategically drilled through it to allow the small end of the taper pin to pass through it
could be used to tighten and retain the pin. Maybe?

http://www.mcmaster.com/#taper-dowel-pins/=i7db8l
Look down the page for "Threaded Taper Pins with Hex Nuts" which are inch-sized 1:48 taper. MMC might be a
source for the springs too.

Another idea, of the cheap and dirty variety, would be to cut some tiny strips of .003" shim stock to feed into
the hole along with a worn taper pin.

As for the u-joint, I used up my spare years ago, but I've given some thought about using an old rayon-belted
tire I've got to fabricate new discs... and since the riveting job I did on my freewheel clutch still hasn't
blown apart despite constant use, I imagine the same technique would serve on the unit in question. I'd
probably use a press to punch out the discs too.

Might tightening up loose shifting mechanisms facilitate cleaner shifting and improve driving
enjoyment on many of our old Saabs? I suspect yes.

Why not call Jack at MMS Sevices?  He could probably rebuild it and provide good tapered pins.  Or Mark Ashcraft?  An old knuckle is probably just that...ready to crack and/or warp.

If it were me I'd delete the donut (with a welded in tube) and replace the U-joints with new (or repurposed) or repurposed ones plus new taper pins.

Re: Sonett V4 shifter coupler linkage repair

Stefan, would deleting the donut require you to move the steering column down to compensate?

Inversely, would adding a fatter donut or a longer intermediate shaft require moving the steering column
up? I ask because I'm tall, tall man who drives with the seat pushed way back, and telescoping the steering
would be just the ticket.

What's the purpose of the donut anyway? Is it to isolate vibrations from the steering column/shift lever?

The Saab 900 has a similar canvas donut in the shifter rod, between the
engine and the fire wall. I once tore that and replaced it with a rubber
one cut out of an old mud guard I had lying around. I ground off the
rivets and replaced them with nuts and bolts.

> 2. any source or spec on the small springs that are in the joint covered with the rubber boot?
I had some broken ones too but never bothered to replace them. The
springs take up some wear in the U-joints.
> 3. any source for new taper pins, or other suggestions on how to best affix the shaft.
Similar pins are used in the 900, but only with a threaded end on one
side. Andy had a source for them.

Yes, I have some on my parts shelf, but I'm in Europe... I'm sure
somebody nearer to you can help you out. From his postings I understand
Tim Nine has lots of parts cars on his property.
