Re: Sonett 3 Outer cv boot
> Anyone have a substitute for this? You can still get the original ones, no need for substitutes. > Can you just press out the axel (after removing assembly) No need to press out the axle to replace the dust boot. There are two ways to do that 1- cut off the old dust boot(s), pull the new ones over the T at the end of the drive shaft. Some people manage do this without tearing the rubber. 2- clean the CV joint of all grease, hang the entire hub assembly in a vise (with the T between two pieces of wood). Put a pile of rags or some polystyreen foam sheets on the floor under the hub assembly. Place the narrow part of a hammer on the inner part of the CV joint (not on the ring at the end of the axle!) and with another heavy hammer hit hard on the other side of the hammer on the CV. After some hits the axle will come out of the CV joint and the hub assembly will drop to the floor. Now it is easy to slide the old dust boots off te axle and replace them. Re: Sonett 3 Outer cv boot
I've done it both ways, and I'd recommend doing it over the T-end of the shaft. Here's pictures of the tool I made, though not of it in use: http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/86198/sn/4363595/name/CV+Boot+shoehorn+A.jpg http://xa.yimg.com/kq/groups/86198/sn/1080671447/name/CV+boot+shoehorn+B.jpg In use, the shoehorn is inserted through the boot and they are together put over one of the ends of the "T" which has been lightly greased. After pushing the boot down onto the T-end as far as possible, the shoehorn is pulled around over the other end. One possible advantage of doing it the other way is that the balls in the cv joint can be replaced. (I'll leave it to others to opine whether that is useful, since obviously wear occurs in the cast inner and outer joint parts, but the new balls were nice and shiny compared to the old and scratched ones and the joints have never exhibited any problem since. The balls are a standard inch size available at any bearing house.) Reassembling a disassembled shaft necessitates compressing a spring ring deeply into its groove on the splined end of the shaft. I didn't have access to the special splined-jaw pliers for that, but I was able to compress the ring using a few small drill bits, some .030" brass shim stock and a hose clamp. Re: Sonett 3 Outer cv boot
There's no temporary patch, but on the other hand, unless you are driving on sandy windswept or wet and salted roads, I wouldn't be overly concerned about delaying the repair just as long as you are careful to keep injecting some moly-graph grease in amongst the balls now and then to keep them lubed and quiet. While with the wheel aimed straight ahead it might seem there's room for a patch, when turning it can be seen that the room completely disappears and any patch will be put under tremendous stress. One nice thing about these Saab half shafts and bearing carriers is that they are swappable left for right; possibly something which will prolong the useful life of both wheel bearings and U-joints.
