Rubber Stone Guards

My '71 96 came to me with one of the stone guards missing, and I've picked up a used one I'd like to affix.

Are the seven rubber mounting nubs alone enough to keep it in place? On the existing guard the previous owner
has driven screws through the sheet metal, but I'm pretty sure that's a hack since the "new" guard (which
came off a parts car) has no holes and neither does the bare fender.

Not sure I trust the rubber nubs on their own. Would an adhesive be advisable?

Yes, and I have also used an adhesive along the top edge to avoid water
getting between the rubber and the fender.

I have also cut the back of a wobbly rubber guard, along the edges and
around the rubber nubs, to take out the pieces of rusted metal inside
the guard. That makes it much more flexible ad easier to fit.
