DMGeneral - Agenda for tomorrow

The Data Management Project Manager's Online Meeting will be conducted on Tuesday, January 29, at 9:00am PT, dial-in 866 330 1200 passcode 1331987, video IP 140.252.1.34 (NOAO bridge)

Agenda
Revised R&D plan/budget status -   The board will review the revised DM R&D budget at the next meeting (Feb. 6).  I anticipate a significant increase for DM, commensurate with the request in the DM R&D plan.

Organization/Governance Meetings – CCB, DM Council, System Architecture Team charters have been drafted, processed for comments from LSSTC, IPAC, NCSA.   I will post the new version for general comments shortly.  I also posted a revised working groups charter to docushare-140.  Please review the WG charter updates and provide any comments back to Jeff.

LSSTC DM Office Move – All Tucson DM people moved from LSSTC to NOAO (Tim is already at Steward Observatory).  I published new office numbers and telephones to the list.

Controls/DAQ meeting at LSSTC – Minutes will be published by Terry Schalk and I will post to lsst-data.  Most significant results (to DM):
There will be some portion of the Image Processing Pipeline that will run on the mountain and base for Image visualizations for control and commissioning purposes.  Some lower-resolution image will be used as “comfort display” for these purposes.
The OCS will query the base database for WCS and possibly other information
The mountain/base bandwidth will (subject to more detailed cost analysis) be increased to 10x10 Gbps
The linux boxes at the mountain will most likely be removed, with the mountain temporary buffer (2 x 2 nights) done by the SDS (DAQ subsystem).

MREFC Estimate – I am currently reworking the UML-based estimate.  I need % time spent on DC2 by month from each person who worked on it ASAP.  I have most, but still need a few people.

Upcoming meetings –
Feb 1               Controls middleware meeting with Lockheed Martin in Tucson, German Schumacher coordinator
Feb 5 – 6         DC2 post-mortem/DC3 planning on AccessGrid Jeff Kantor, Cristina Beldica coordinators
Feb 11 – 13?    Camera – DM Interface meeting Chuck Claver coordinator
Feb 14 – 15?   Applications Architecture Meeting at IPAC  Tim Axelrod, Andy Connolly, Suzy Dodd coordinators
March 10 - 14  MOPS training Tucson Robert Jedicke coordinator
March 29          LSST Primary Mirror High Fire social event Suzanne Jacoby coordinator
May 19 – 23    All Hands Meeting at NCSA  Don Sweeney coordinator

? Means tentative date

DMGeneral - Agenda for Today

Hello all,

The every other week DM PM meeting will be held today at 9am PT, dial-in 866 330 1200, passcode 1331987, video IP 140.252.1.34 (NOAO bridge).

The agenda will be the draft revised R&D plan.  The revisions include updates for new organizations participating in DM since the last plan version, as well as an expansion of R&D activities based on an as yet unapproved, anticipated increase in DM private funding.  This plan is available in the project archive (document-2400) in DRAFT form and is meant as a starting point for discussion.  I will ask all DM partners to examine the plan and rationalize the tasks with their personnel and budget as those are finalized.

DMGeneral - Agenda for DM Meeting at Google

Hello all,

The agenda for the upcoming DM Meeting at Google on October 23 – 24 has been posted to the project archive  (document 4246 Word, document 4247 pdf).  Please reply to Jeff Kantor (not this list) with the following information:

What days will you attend?
What nights will you need a hotel?
Will you need support from LSST for travel expenses?
Which breakout are you likely to attend (if you are already in a working group, I will assume you will attend that breakout)?

My assumptions so far about breakouts are as follows:
Applications Working Group: Lupton, Becker, Owen, Silvestri, Connolly, Pierfederici, Bosch, Gee
Middleware Working Group: Plante, Daues, Petrowicz, Matarazzo, Gertz, Kantor
Infrastructure/Technology Assessment/DAQ Working Group: Dossa, Cribbs, C. Smith, Schalk, Marshall, Huffer
Data Access/Database Working Group: Becla, Lim, Thakar, Nieto-Santisteban, Monkewitz
DQA Working Group: Mannings
Calibration:  Axelrod

We may also hold a side meeting on Project Management, but not sure yet.  Thanks!

Jeff

Re: DMGeneral - Agenda for DM Meeting at Google

Hi Jeff -

Are we going to prepare to face the inevitable (at least to me) questioning from the Google folks
about why we are designing our own Middleware layer from scratch instead of using some sort of
already designed and supported Enterprise-class platform, such as Java (in use by Google) or JBOSS
in particular? I anticipate "reinventing the wheel" questions and statements like "if you were just
using this particular platform currently in use at Google, we could be of immediate help"; other
examples are the EJB3 persistence model and JMX for overseeing our computing environment.

Just curious,
Andy

Hi Andy,

One more thought on this, if Google could use J2EE for their entire problem,
why did they create and do their "heavy lifting" with gfs, bigttable,
mapreduce, etc.?

Hi Jeff,

I don't think Andy was questioning our approach, but rather anticipate a
question that may very likely come up and get us prepared for it.

That's fine, I just want to make sure we don't foster false impressions
about what we are doing. There are lots of people who read this list that
don't know exactly what we are doing.

Hi Jeff - I don't disagree with our decisions, just playing devil's advocate and trying to
anticipate some of the interactions...

Re: DMGeneral - Agenda for DM Meeting at Google

Actually, your premise is totally false. We are building a very thin custom
interface layer to a large number off-the-shelf middleware packages. The
effort is a small fraction of a completely custom development.

None of the off-the-shelf enterprise frameworks support the functionality
and parallel performance we need, especially J2EE, and none of them are
likely to last until 2023, so the interface layer provides us a degree of
portability that existing packages won't.

Re: DMGeneral - Agenda for tomorrow

Hi Jeff,

Is this telecon on Tuesday or Wednesday?
I tried to call in a bit late but there was no one
on the line except Cristina - a latecomer as me.

thanks
Jacek

Hello all,

I stayed on for 10 minutes and no one was on, so I left. I actually meant
today, but my mail was misleading, so let's go for tomorrow (Wed.)

vacation calendar

Hi,

Attached is an Excel file for vacation information. I filled in some
of the info. If you already know you vacation, please update the file
and send it back to me (not to the list!). You can also send simple
text and I'll update the file.

I will post a pdf version on the DC2 wiki and will update this file
periodically.

Thanks,
Cristina
