Which stud broke?  I have been through a few on the exhaust side of the engine.  If you think back, they usually
felt bad going out.  I have learned to keep a spare set in the trailer for trackside teardowns.

Tom,

You probably had oil on the stud.  Most torque settings are done with
 dry threads (unless otherwise stated in the manual, not sure about the
 493).  The result is that you will snap the bolt before getting torque.
