There are some "blackwater" treatment systems for flush toilets that use
biological systems (plants, animals) to purify/convert the humanure. Most I
know of are at least somewhat DIY.

Do you have a link to the Swedish one? I'm curious to see what it is.

cheers,

Very intersting. Haven't seen anything like it.

The separator design is very clever...could be useful for most any kind of
liquid-solid separation task.

Not reasonable though IMO to degrade all that water when waterless composting
toilets work just fine. Plus the urine is not captured and composted, so all
that nitrogen is 'wasted' (most of our nitrogen goes out in urine; feces have
most of the phosphorus).

good points john, for those who wanna keep it "simple stupid" and save
money, "the humanure book" is hard to beat for a clear easy to understand
way of dealing with our shit.....one of the top ten best books of the last
century imho....i just redid me whole compost toilet scene since reading the
book and things are breaking down great now.....and all that great humus for
the soil besides....aloha,

Re: geothermal heat pump

The U.S. Department of Energy has lots of information on geothermal systems:

http://www.eere.energy.gov/consumerinfo/heatcool/hc_space_geothermal_shopping.html

If you scroll down to the bottom of the page there is a section with links on installation.

Next Energy, a Canadian company also has a good website:

http://www.nextenergyinc.com/index.phtml

You didn't mention what kind of geothermal system you were interested in, but Next Energy has an installation manual for vertical two stage systems at:

http://www.nextenergyinc.com/pdf/UltraClassicIOM.pdf

Another good reference, especially if one is wanting to make an "official"
case for low-tech humanure composting, is:

"Future Fertility - transforming human waste into human wealth," by John
Beeby, published by Ecolgy Action and available from their Bountiful Gardens
catalog at:

http://bountifulgardens.org/compost-fertility.html

...scroll down quite a ways to find it...it provides a research/experimental
survey of a variety of mostly low-tech humanure composting methods/systems
with pros and cons of each. It's less flip and more academic-seeming than the
Humanure Handbook, which can be helpful when approaching bureaucrats.

cheers,
John S.
